La Pausa y La Cruz

Theyre standing on one foot, the cars whizzing by. Theyre in mid-air ready
to leap across the street. Theyre standing on one foot poised to run.

Theyre on bended knee saying mass, praying for the disparados. Theyre
begging for food on Calle Florida. Theyre huddled down on the soccer field
praying for a goal.

Theyre walking tall on Avenida de San Juan, shifting their weight from left
to right on the cobblestones. Theyre waiting for the bank to open,
shuffling from side to side.

Theyre going around in a circle: theyre going around the mark, ever ready
to lift his wallet. Their minds are turning round and round wondering if the
new government is going to be the same as all the others. Theyre going
counter-clockwise round in a circle.

Theyre stealing glances over their shoulder, looking down or away, everyone
knows someone who looked the wrong way. Theyre looking at the girls in the
eye, but they darent look at another man that way. No one looks the army in
the eye. Theyre looking backward with a twitch, knowing their life could be
snuffed out in a moment.
Everybodys lookin down, everybody is looking down on everybody else.

Theyre watching how they walk, theyre watching where they walk and if
others are looking at their walk. Theres cracks and holes in the pavement,
cracks and hole in the society too and nobody wants to fall through. Theyre
looking down, lest they fall into a hole.
