So, that fits the description. But no, his show was not "overly ambitious".
It did not contain any classical music, only a lot of (good) folklore, and
very mediocre tango choreography, executed poorly to slightly below average.
Except for one slow valse, IMO.
As for overly ambitious shows, Bravo's "Forever Tango Nuevo" was a
completely flop everywhere it went, but I still enjoyed that a lot more than
this one. Bravo put a chaotic mixture of dances on stage, with Gavito and
Saveedra dancing solo tango(no woman, Marcela was pregnant at the time) and
solo folklore in some strange competitive dialogue with each other, a scene
with two tango couples, and three folklore dancers dancing at the same time,
with a classical ballerina in a tutu doing jete's (large jumps) amid all the
chaos. But the dancers were of a different class, and the choreo too. I was
never bored, just incredulous.

Hi Astrid et al,
'Forever Tango Nuevo' , under the name 'Malambo' had a short unsuccessful
run in San Francisco (where the original FT stayed for 22 months). You
describe it perfectly, although Marcela had already had her (and Bravo's)
baby and danced once or twice with Gavito. The show was "all Gavito all the
time" with the weird folklore scenes you describe and weirder ballet, not
good folklore or good ballet. Imho, it was basically an ego trip for Gavito.
There is evidently another version about to travel as friends of ours are
in it, but I'm unclear what that will be like. Our friends, Natalia Hills
(from the original FT) and her partner Francisco Forquero, are among the
very best, so we have hopes.
Abrazos,
Barbara

I saw that already, last autumn in Tokyo. The newest Forever Tango version
is much more like the old one. They dropped the folklore. In the one I saw,
Marcela was pregnant again, with her second baby, maybe in the fourth month
(I asked Oscar Mandagaran about her weight gain, he explained to me, that
she was not just "5 kg fatter"as I had thought)and Gavito was kind of sick,
I think, so they danced very slowly and low key, but the rest of the show is
certainly up to par again. And Natalia is absolutely fantastic now ! I told
Oscar, and he said:"She dances with her boyfriend now".

Why do these shows never visit Minneapolis? We'll take even the poorer
ones! Anything!
