To list

After I read a few messages about breathing difficulty, it dawned on me that
I too suffered from it when I was down there last year. (Their late spring)

I was told that there was a bug going around. We all had tickling throat,
particularly in the smokiing environment. Then it developed into coughing.
I recall being sick after having been there for 4 weeks, my bed rested for a
day or two was considered a light case.

It is interesting to realize in hindsight some of my friends also fell ill
one way or the other, besides those succumbed to the same repertory illness.
After I recovered, then I suffered from an unknown allergy which caused
havoc for another month.

Needless to say coughing and allergy were all gone once I returned home.

"City of Good Health" is what we need there! :-)

Buenos Aires means "Good Air".

The Spanish Conquistadores arrived in Central America, explored and settled
the areas that they liked. They never settled the northern part of North
America or the southern part of South America. Places with extreme cold
weather.

They did not like the cold weather so they settled Florida, Texas, Arizona,
New Mexico, California and left the are north where there is snow for the
English, the Dutch and the French.

They proceeded to explore the rest of the continent which was too warm for
their taste. They were always after gold and silver.
When the Natives were asked where those precious metals could be found they
always pointed south (I believe they were trying to get rid of them). They
finally got to the southernmost portion of the continent, the land of
tango.:))

Finally! -they thought - lots of silver was to be found there so they called
the country Argentina, form Latin Argentum, Silver.
Silver was never found in Argentina.

The weather was temperate and very pleasant, summer and winter so they
founded a city that they named Santa Maria de los Buenos Aires.
(Saint Mary of the Good Airs). First foundation 1536 second foundation 1580.

The air quality has worsened due to the enormous amount of traffic in the
city.

What is being don to solve the situation:

1- New Subway lines are being constructed that will cover the whole city.
One is almost in Villa Urquiza, my neighborhood and a place for Salon Tango.
2- All cabs and many private cars are propelled by propane. Natural gas that
burns completely and causes no pollution. Buses still burn fuel oil which is
very polluting.
3- Some tunnels and ways to derive truck traffic are being planned or in
construction.
4- Incinerators are forbidden.

Despite of was it is said, and I agree with the description as I feel the
irritation myself when I am there.
The incidence of sinusitis and allergic conditions is lower than in the USA.
The life span of Argentineans is about equal as that of the USA: 79 years
for women and 75 for men.

Banning cigarette smoking indoors would cure the majority of the problems in
the milongas.

Would it be possible to send the smokers outside to smoke? Of all the venues I dance regularily in, only my regular CW dance place allows smoking. They do have a very good ventilation system however, so I've never really had a problem with my respiratory system, thank goodness ;-)

I remember watching a movie in dublin & was one of the first ones there. I instantly noticed ash trays on the back of the chair in front of me. By the time the movie started, i was immersed in smoke. Osmious indeed. This was in 1982 though, it may have changed.

PS: I remember seeing a joke somewhere, stating that having a smoking section in a resteraunt was similar to having a peeing section in a public pool...
