You just opened a can of worms. Some people here are fanatically against
it. Other are for it.
(Guess which one I am in.) Most people consider vals (and by extension,
european waltzs that are similar to vals) to not count for this purpose.

Basically, there are two types. There is dancing using the steps without
the "heart" of tango, which is not realtango dancing, just a different type
of dancing that has roots in tango.

Then there is the harder to do, attempt to dance true tango to
non-traditional music. I have seen done this once and only once andfelt I
succeeded. (Music was the theme to the James bond movie Golden-eye).
