One of the novelties presented at the V Festival de Tango Buenos Aires was "Danza maligna" , a stage performance , directed by Fabian Luca and choreography by Silvana Grill . Now it has also been presented at Theatre National Challiot in Paris, on june 2003.

People that saw the performance in Buenos Aires told me it was something different of past stage performances. Perhaps due to there were four milongueros involved : Ernesto "Puppy" Castello, Ernesto"El flaco Dany" Garcia, Jorge Manganelli and Eduardo"el Nene" Masci . Their dancing partners at Theatre Challiot were : Vanina Bilous, Silvana Grill , Susana Rojo & Elina Roldan.

The idea of this stage performance is to recreate the atmosphere of a milonga , with all the human conflicts arising and some of the capital sins. Lust, envy,etc.etc..

Silvana Grill commented that it was difficult to practice with the milongueros, since they were reluctant to rehearse , being their dancing at the milongas, an improvisation . This four men have been dancing for the pleasure of it. and this was their first perfomance in this category , which I do not know how to label : " improvisation on stage " maybe. The female dancing partners are artists, but also milongueras. So it seems there could be something arising with this new idea.

Now the soundtrack that they use for their performances is available at music stores of Buenos Aires, it has been produced by Epsa records, the same label of El Arranque, Julio Pane Trio, Pablo Mainetti Quinteto.

These are the titles of the Tangos played at the Cd,and also at the show. Maybe to listen to this list would be useful to try to understand their proposal, and if they have been able to reproduce an atmosphere of a milonga.

The following order is , as it was presented at Theatre Challiot. The CD has the same themes, but in another order. There are some references related to the show, since not all the themes are danced, some were also sung or sung/danced. Singer was Ms.Alejandra Radano

- Danza Maligna (F.Randle. C.Frollo) 3.36 " Tango -danced-
- Gallo ciego (A.Bardi) 3.30" Tango -danced only last part-
- El distinguido ciudadano (P.Paulos) 2.21" Tango -danced-

- La Montonera (E.Delfino - M.Romero) 2.45" Vals.(danced)
- Tus besos fueron mios (F.G.Jimenez- A.Aieta) 2.38".Tango (sung/danced)

Subject: Re: Danza maligna

I saw Danza Maligna at Chaillot in Paris a few days ago. It was organised
wihthin the frame of a festival with 4 different programs (danza maligna was
only one of the 4 programs) in which these dancers were also taking part
(except the first program so they danced in 3 programs out of 4).

It is strange because, without any sarcasm, I still don't know what to think
of this show.

On one hand it's a brilliant idea not to do just another demo show that end
up looking all like another with more or less the same dancers you find in
the all festivals.

It was also brilliant because people how came for the show and who weren't
all tangueros could identify themselves easily to the dancers and conceive
that tango is for all no matter your age or your physical condition etc.

I also liked some of the rythmic interpretations especially from el falco
dany or maybe some subtle steps by some other dancers and of course the
whole recipient, the way it was presented and choreographed.

On the other hand, I hate to say it, but for me, none of the dancers (except
Vanina Bilous) could qualify for going on stage because people expect a
certain level of dancing when they go to see a performance in a prestigious
place such as Chaillot especially when they give money for that.

Everything is possible but if you bring in a concert hall a lousy musician
to perform a great concert you cannot decently expect a fantastic result in
the sense that it is outstanding (as for Pablo Veron).

Now, it is possible that the idea was not to give what people expected or to
question about the concept of "qualification to go on stage" and maybe
invite us to see beyond what we see, not the dance but what it represents,
what they represent.

I had the same thought on Miguel Angel Zotto's show in the same festival.

But honestly, I think it is possible to admire and respect someone for what
he or she represents, for his work, or his contributions in the evolution of
tango and so on without necessarily liking a show.

I'm still lost, it is terrible not to know what to think :-D

kindest regards
