Subject: D'Arienzo's Don Esteban - different versions?

According to Johan's D'Arienzo discography (
https://users.pandora.be/tangoteca/darienzo/index.html ) there is only
one version of Don Esteban, that recorded on 3 July 1936. My copy of
this (on a Mario Orlando CD) runs for 3:27. Having just purchased the
Lantower double-CD, 5 Grandes del Tango - Juan D'Arienzo y su Orquesta,
I was surprised to see its version having a quoted time of 2:08.

Closer listening makes me suspicious about the Lantower version. To my
admittedly-unmusical ear both versions sound the same up to the 2:00
mark, at which point the Lantower version "switches" to a piano solo
similar to that heard at the 0:37 mark and then finishes with a most
un-tango fade.

Just to add to the confusion, I searched for Don Esteban at TangoStore
and, apart from the Lantower CD, found only a Magenta CD, La Morocha.
The version on there is claimed to be a vocal with Albert Echag|e, but
unfortunately doesn't come with a sample to listen to.

Is there any D'Arienzo historian/detective out there who can help with
my confusion about how many versions of Don Esteban exist?

Thankyou, Geoff

Geoff,

From two or three copies of D'Arienzo's Don Esteban that I have, they
all run for ~3.27 minutes. Sandra and John in Brisbane (I assume that
you are up there) should have a copy that you can compare. Another
release of Don Esteban is on El rey del compas on El bandoneon label.
You could sample it from danzaymovimiento web site. BTW, Echague did not
sing Don Esteban according to Disography at todotango.com

Cheers,

Chanop

Geoff & Chanop,
I have only two recordings of Don Esteban, both from Elshaw at ToTango.
First is included in the chronologica, noted 3/07/36 3:27. The second is
included on a D'Arienzo compilation. Time is 3:22. It is much cleaner and
brighter than the first, but could be the same recording remastered. Keith
will know.
Best wishes,
John

Thankyou to all who replied to this query - as well as the responses on
the list, four listeros responded privately.

The overall conclusion seems to be that D'Arienzo recorded Don Esteban
only once, but that some record companies have remixed the original.
Whether the remixing is legitimate or not is unclear - the original runs
3:27 and so could have been shortened for radio.

Although I don't have a copy of the El Bandoneon version, which is of
similar length to the original, it appears that it could be a remix
(there is apparently a piano solo around the 2:10 mark, which is not on
the original, that sounds to be repeated from the 0:40 mark).

It was agreed by all that there is no version with Albert Echague on vocals.

And, Chanop, I'm in Sydney rather than Brisbane!

Regards, Geoff
