Subject: Cafife in lunfardo

Cafife is the box where the money of the bets are kept by the cashier , known in lunfardo as "cafifero".From this word cafife , derived the words "canfinfle","canfle", "canfunfa" or "canfinflero" , the pimp that exploit a woman to prostitute.
I include the spanish comment below, it is made by Oscar Himschoot, one of the clever men I have ever heard talking about lunfardo, with a witty character. Don Oscar used to have a charming program on local radio FM Tango , "Lunfardeando", but it was removed when the authorities of the radio changed . A pity.

Warm regards

CANFINFLERO
"compadrito y "canfinflero"
El "canfinfle", "canfle", "canfunfa" o "canfinflero" es el tipo que explota a la mujer haciindole ejercer la prostitucisn. Proviene de "cafifero", el que tira la caqota en una mesa de juego y "cafife" es la caja donde el "cafifero" guarda la guita que recauda.

The definition that I have for Carancanfunfa (also carancanfun) is related
to somebody who dances tango with dexterity and also to the style of tango
with "cortes" (it does make sense in the context of "el choclo)
Now, my lunfardo dictionary (Diccionario del Lunfardo - Athos Espindola -
Editorial Planete) doesn't explicit where the word cafife comes from.

It is interesting that both expressions, the lunfardo and the Portuguese are
related to the game. There are many words in lunfardo that come from the
Portuguese so, I wouldn't be surprised if this words are related.
I will ask my old Argentinean erudite friends about this (they will be
delighted to take part on this, only that I will have to translate)

Anyway, one of the projects I have is to curate a Lunfardo/English
dictionary that I want to put online as part of the services that our new
site offers (www.trestango.com). Don't know if I will have the time to do it
(because it takes a lot of translating and typing and I am always busy
avoiding to be evicted for luck of payment)

Other idea I have is maybe to have a list exclusively about lunfardo.

We'll see

I'll keep you posted

Ciao
