Does anyone out there know how to obtain a copy of "Tango, The Exile
of Gardel". a French movie from the mid 1980s.? Has anyone with the
ability to do so considered making and marketing affordable (legal ,
respecting all copyrights, etc.) copies. There would certainly be a
market for it . Mary

Funny you should mention this.

I saw it in 1985 or so, and loved it. Then it completely disappeared.
Later on in life I got married, and a few years ago for my birthday, my wife
tracked down the one film distribution company in the United States that has
it, and she had a one-of-a-kind video made for me.

I mentioned it on this listserv back in April or May, and a few people asked
for copies, which I said I'd be happy to provide. Unfortunately, it turns
out the video is copy protected and I'm not able to make video-to-video
copies.

But I work with a bunch of electrical engineers. One guy figured out how to
get the video portion from tape to DVD, but for some reason he has not been
able to get the sound right yet. So he's working on it, but at a very
leisurely pace.

If you'd like, I can get you the name of the film distributor in NYC that
made the video for me wife.

Cheers,

Talking of Gardel...

Does anyone know whatever came of that half-baked cuckoo idea of
awarding him a posthumous Academy Award (Oscar) and having his name
etched into the Hollywood Walk-of-Fame?

OK, here's the deal...

My wife had this video made by:

New Yorker Films Video
16 W. 61st St
New York, NY 20023

(212) 247-6110

She paid $300 for it. (A lot, yes. But she had been hearing me talk about
it for years and years...it was my birthday...and she's just that kind of
woman...which is why I married her).

Before you go out and get a copy, I would reiterate what Lucy said: the
film may not be what you expect. There is very little or no actual tango
dancing in it. Rather, it is a film about tango sensibilities. There's
good music (Piazolla), but the movie itself is about the hearts and souls of
some Argentine exiles in Paris during the years of the military
dictatorship.

For my part, I never get tired of watching it, and I've always found it very
inspirational for dance...even though it's not actually about dance.

I will continue trying to make a DVD with working video and sound. I'll let
you know when we finally get there.

All -

"Tangos, l'exil de Gardel ..." is out of print (even the company in
Argentine that used to strike prints doesn't have any copies). You
can, however, try borrowing a VHS copy via inter-library loan.
This will work best for those of you with access to University libraries
and there may be borrowing/shipping charges. WorldCat shows 20 copies
worldwide, not all of which will circulate (see below).

All of that said, please be aware that this film may not be what you
expect. I've seen it several times and love it, but it is a tango
and not a film about tango... one exiles memories of another
(solanas/gardel).

"Fernando Solanas has observed his native land of Argentina, and its
political and social conditions, by means of cinema for more than 30
years. He has focused on these themes ever since his sensational
documentary film debut La Hora de los hornos (The Hour of the Furnaces)
(1967) bin the meantime a classic of political documentary cinema. His
feature film Los Hijos de Fierro (Sons of Fierro) (1972) was banned in his
own country.

The repressive measures of the military dictatorship in Argentina forced
the director into exile in Paris in the mid 1970s. During this period he
made Le Regard des autres (1980) and Tangos, el exilio de Gardel (Tangos,
The Exile of Gardel) (1985). In the mid 1980s Fernando Solanas returned to
Argentina; he continued to examine the country as well as South America in
El Sur (The South) (1988), El Viaje (The Journey) (1992) and La Nube (The
Cloud) (1998). However, Solanasbfilms are not the only testimony of his
political commitment: from 1993 to 1997 he was also a member of the
Argentinean parliament although as soon as his term was over, he
returned to filmmaking.

In his latest documentary Memoria del saqueo, he addresses recent
Argentinean crises as well as the impact of neoliberal politics and
globalization. The film uses interviews and archive material to shed light
on topics like corruption and the squandering of public funds. With its
vivid coverage, director Solanas explains, "my film aims at
contributing to the urgent and indispensable discussion under way in my
country, in Latin America, in the entire world, on the inhumanity of
globalization. At the same time it aspires to prove that another world is
possible"

" "Que sC3lo es tiempo. El tango crea un turbio/ pasado irreal que de
algC:n modo es cierto/ el recuerdo imposible de haber muerto/ peleando en
una esquina del suburbio/" (That only is time. Tango creates a turbid
unreal past that is somehow true. The impossible memory of having died
fighting on a corner of the suburb)." - Borges
