Not too long ago, I read about something that seems to be popular in Europe. I might have read it right here on the list even.

I believe this took place in the Nethelands. A public place was choosen and a time was announced by the organizer. At the appointed time, music started playing, and couples emerge from the crowd and started dancing. It only lasted a minute or two, or maybe one song. Then everyone merges back into the crowd and go their separate ways.

This seems to be quite popular in Europe and it is not limited to tango. Can someone provide more info? Has something like this taken place else where, especially in North America?

Here in Portland, the younger Lindy Hop swing crowd, does what they call Lindy Bombing. They'll decide a nightclub or parkblocks or someplace where they can dance, unexpectedly. A ton of them will show up &, voila... Never heard of a Tango bomb though ;o)

Yeah, here in the SF bay area there are similar events and they are called
Hit and Run tangos.

We also have organized hit-and-run milongas in Dallas, and such events
have been organized in New York City.

Well, I made the mixture of this summer hype [originating from NYC]
'Flash Mob' and 'Tango' by organizing a 'Tango Flash Mob' - the first
one world wide. A "Flash Mob" could be characterized as an unforseen
(for the public) sudden gathering of people (usually organized
through internet) who act somehow 'strange' (for the general public
who's not knowing what is going on) for a very short period of time
... and before the public really realizes what is going on it's all
over again. :-)

You're right, it was right here on the list! :-)

This was my posting with the subject "1st ˇTAN!go Flash MOB -
Nijmegen, Netherlands, last saturday":

Through different channels (InterNet via the dutch flash-mob-website
https://www.dutchmobbing.com/ but also on location at Nijmegen's tango
'Mekka' "El Corte" where at that very weekend a small summer festival
took place) we (I had some organizing helpers) initially gave a time
and three meeting places within the city center of Nijmegen. During a
short period participants could take up instruction leaflets handed
out. On these they would find the information on what to do [they did
not know beforehand that tango would be involved :-) ], where and at
which moment for how long.

that pre-mob-instructions were giving via that dutchmobbing website:
https://www.dutchmobbing.com/viewtopic.php?t=208

people could even download the pre-instructions including
descriptions on how to get to the place in three different languages
(dutch, german, english). the english version you could find here:

Actually there was no music involved but a 'dance still'! :-)

Our instructions read like this:
"There's a street party going on but the time is hold for one minute.
The danser are standing as frozen in the street. This moment is the
Flash!"

Yep, only lasted one minute. Well, only was planned to last one
minute ... but one couple definitely enjoyed it soooooo much ... they
forgot about the time and stood there for some more minutes. :-))))

talk to me in person: I'll be around San Francisco during oct. 6th-
15th, proceeding to Portland afterwards for the festival, and some
extra days in the US as well. Then I can 'tell' you how we
experienced it.]

'Flash mobs' are definitely not limited to tango. I incorporated
tango into a flash mob. Actually the moment I first read on the
internet about flash mobbing I immediately knew that I had to
organize one myself ... including a "dance" theme. And as my dance is
tango ... which other I could have chosen?

To my knowledge no other "Tango Flash Mob" has been happening
elsewhere so far.

Hope everything is a bit more evident right now. If not (or even if
but if you just wonna get in contact) feel free to ask again or mail
me off-list.

Tango Greetings!
Christian

P.S.: Rick answered to your question thinking for 'tango bombs' [I do
not really fancy the word 'bomb'! :-( ]

Well, our 'Flash Mob' would not fit into that description as
participants were not aware of what they were going to do but just
about a quarter of an hour before it was going to happen. I think
with such a "bom' " people would rehearsel first ... and that
surprise the rest. But also they would not disturb other parties by
overruling with tango.
