Thank you to all who replied about this orchestra;I
will be in touch soon.
In the "old days" orchestras played all types of
dances(tango,milonga,vals,polca,zamba,ranchera,fox-trot,corrido,pasodoble,gato,chacarera,escondido,vals
criolla,tango-milonga,candombe,etc).What a shame some
people nowadays do not want to "spice up" a milonga
with some of these delightful dances. Someone wrote
the music/lyrics to all these other dances, which
brings me back to Filiberto...he wrote the music to
the delightful Ranchera "La Charlatana".You can hear
this on the Reliquias CD of Rafael Rossi (who also
composed tangos,rancheras and posodobles)
Rancheras,Valses y Pasaodobles. Some delightful
melodies on this CD,even if you can not dance them.
Enrique Rodriguez is another orchestra for which you
can find CDs with non-tango dances by this "orquesta
tipica" ...Reliquias - "Para bailar sin parar" and
"Bailando todos los ritmos". Happy listening!...and maybe, dancing?

Juan De Dios Filiberto was a wonderful tango composer - "Quesas De Bandoneon", "Clavel del Aire", "Caminito", "Malevaje", and "El =
Panuelito" to name a few.

He had a great orquesta in the 1930s-1940s - "Orquesta Portena" - and I have five tracks taken from various compilations, but I have not been =
able to track down any more.

Do any of our friends in Argentina (or anywhere else for that matter) know the reason why there are no recordings of him to be had - I =
generally refer to CDs, but if anyone knows of available LPs I would love to know more about those.

Enquiries to a couple of my resources in BsAs remain unanswered.

Is Filiberto considered to be a "persona non gratis"?

John G.

John Gleeson inquired about Juan de Dios Filiberto's recordings.

According to the Club de Tango website <https://www.clubdetango.com.ar/>,
there is Juan de Dios Filiberto CD, Guardia Vieja on EMI (8 38395 2). The
listed tracks are El paņuelito; El 13; Visiones de la pampa; Clavel del
aire; Bataraza; Re-fa-si; Porteņita; Tus ojos me embelesan; Tres arboles;
Responso malevo; El credo; Pensando en ti; El 16; La charlatana; Botines
viejos; La quinterita; Santiago del Estero; San Lorenzo.

Although I am by no means an expert on the subject, it seems as though
Filiberto did not record very much. According Todo Tango, Filiberto
recorded 25 numbers for the Odeon label from 1932 to 1936 and 20 for the
Victor company from 1941 to 1959

I'm still looking for albums (LPs, CDs) by the "Juan De Dios Filiberto" orquesta of the 1930s-1940s (not recordings by other orquestas of his =
compositions).

If anybody "runs across/bumps into" a source for any of these recordings, please let me know.

Thanks, John G.

Hola John:

I have some information about Orchestra Juan de Dios Filiberto, perhaps it is redundant for you, but I ll take the risk, just in case.

As I usually attend to this Orchestra concerts, I took note of its history.

Mr. Oscar Juan de Dios Filiberti (his real name) was born on March 8th, 1885 and died November 11th, 1964). He founded his orchestra in 1932 with the name: Orquesta Porteqa. They had their debut and played several years at the famous Cafi Tortoni.

The orchestra recorded twenty five songs for Odesn in between 1932 and 1936; and between 1941 and 1959, twenty more songs for Victor, most of them instrumentals.

In 1938, the Government of the City Buenos Aires created the Orquesta Popular Municipal de Arte Folklsrico, directed by Filiberto and based on his original Orchestra. It had more than 20 musicians and it worked until 1948.

During this year, the Orchestra became into the responsibility of The National Government and its name was changed to Orquesta de Mzsica Popular, with forty musicians and under Filiberto s direction.

In 1956 the Orchestra changed its name to Orquesta de Mzsica Argentina y de Camara.

In 1976, after ten years of his death and in honour to his first director, it change its name into Orquesta Nacional de Mzsica Argentina Juan de Dios

Filiberto.

Among its directors we can mention the famous master musicians: Josi Rosa, Osvaldo Requena and Osvaldo Piro.

Now a day it is directed by the virtuous musicians: Nestor Marconi (bandoneonist) and Atilio Stampone (pianist).

John, perhaps you can find more information and some albums seeking by the different names or record companies.

Best regards from Buenos Aires,

Julio Corazza.
