Subject: NUMBER OF LA CUMPARSITA VERSIONS

In 1998 existed around 1000 recorded versions of "La Cumparsita"
Today around 1300 versions .
I checked my assumption with the most important collectors and historians
in the world (in Buenos Aires).

By testimony documents was the tango premier in 1917 April 19.- Cafe "La
Giralda"-Montevideo -Uruguay (Firpo)
By other versions , the premier was in 1916 (could be the student carnival
march version)????
Any way, you can find the musical nucleous of "La Cumparsita " in other
previous (1912) tango of Firpo "La Gaucha Manuela" recorded for Juan Maglio
"Pacho". (In C.D.="EL BANDONEON DE PACHO" ---el bandoneon -SWITZERLAND)

Thanks for the information Ruben. I didn't realize there are so many versions. Apparently "La Cumparsita" has become extra popular since 1998 with 300 more versions. It's a good finale for a milonga because it leaves dancers with a good feeling. There is something about "La Cumparsita" that says everything is OK. That the universe is in good order. Even the English meaning "The Little Carnival Procession" seems to convey this message. It is also very easy to dance to with no demands on the dancers. They can feel romantic and connected with their lover. No wonder it is so popular. I wonder what was in the souls of Rodriguez and Firpo when they created the song. It would be interesting to know.

Thank you very much for your email.
In the first question some of the list members mentioned Matos Rodriguez,
and I didn't want to repeat, but thanks again for your helpful
clarification.
Please, check the premier date, because here we, the professional tango
research people have the documents and testimonies
It's a great privilege to me , just a milonguero dancer in Buenos Aires
since 1956 and a Tango Historian, that you share so much knowledge with me.
By the way, you surely noticed I did a wrong typing, it should be 1988
instead of 1998 .....

just
