Subject: Ocho cortado...

Hola to everyone.
A simple question: what is "ocho cortado"?
I know back and front ochos but only recently, in some discussion, I've
discovered this term.
Is it typical of milonguero style or any other style?
Thanks to all for future answers.

A "cut ocho" is one in which the open step of a giro is checked and
reversed. Upon reversal, the leader often takes some of the follower's
space, but always slightly displaces and pivots the follower, directing
the follower's free foot to cross in front of the support foot.
Typically returned to the leader's left, it can theoretically be
returned to the right but be ready to also add a back ocho if the
follower hooks instead of crossing in front. The leftward curvature of
the line of dance makes the latter situation more uncommon and asymmetry
in the frame will make it more challenging.

It's very typical of milonguero style because of it's rhythmic feel (the
steps are three "quicks") and ease of execution in a crowd. IMO it's
appropriate to any style with more dynamic energy and careful attention
to the axes. During the check step the leader is pivoting, during the
cross the follower is pivoting.

Disclaimer: I'm aware of other terms and uses for the above steps.
I've learned the above from a few authoritative sources. But because
it's so common, one would expect numerous variations and technical differences.

Pull together, dance on...
