As far as I know that the origin of 'rebetika'- the word
'rebet'originated from the turkish word meaning; the rebellious and
unruly in character- is much more older.
It was first appeared in 1821 when modern Greece gained her
independece from the Ottoman empire. After that rebetika mainly developed
and began to show itself widespreadly with the immigration of the
Smyrna's refugees in 1922s at the Greek-Turkish war.

But the main theme is the same as in payadas mainly mentioned on social
elements such as poverty, sufferings, complaint and desire, love and bitterness of
life etc...

To Sergio: excellent description of rebetika. kudos from a Greek (of
Anatolian origin!).

For all those interested, the following is a very good website for more
information:
https://www.rebetiko.gr/EN/INDEX.ASP

The song database contains more than 2500 songs. Unfortunately, the
database is not browseable, which means that you have to search for a
particular artist or song, which means you have to know what to look for
:) The good news is that there is a way around that: if you leave all
fields blank and then you click on the "find an artist" button, you'll
get the full list of artists that you can browse.

Also, don't forget to check out the radio station, which you can access
by clicking on the button on the upper right corner (though you will
have to download a free player).

Happy 'pennies' to all,

Barbara
