Subject: PBS Special Tango: The Spirit of Argentina--Schedule and Video

When checking broadcast schedules for their local affiliates for the PBS
special Tango: The Spirit of Argentina, some people are finding that the
broadcast schedule is different than the schedule that Michael posted on
Tango-L. The schedule Michael posted was originally on a press release
sent out by publicists at WLIW-21.

I would recommend that anyone who wants watch or tape the special to check
the schedule with their local PBS affiliate.

You can typically find the webpage of your PBS affiliate by entering
https://www. your affiliate's call letters .org

You can also go to the PBS TV Schedule Page
https://www.pbs.org/tvschedules/

Enter your zip code to find your local PBS station.
Enter the word tango on the next page to search for the program.

I found a link to order a DVD, but the current price is quite expensive--a
$100 pledge to WLIW-21.

The page indicates the DVD will be exclusive to Public Television Stations
through June 30, 2005. After that, I would expect the price to drop.

To find the webpage for ordering the DVD (and making a pledge to WLIW-21),
go to the webpage for WLIW-21
https://www.wliw.org/productions/tango.html

Click Support 21 at the bottom of the page.
Enter tango in the pledge search form, and click GO!
Scroll down the page to
Tango: The Spirit of Argentina: DVD
or
Tango: The Spirit of Argentina: VHS

Prompted by several private emails, I have gone through all ot the
stations listed as showing the special Tango: The Spirit of Argentina to
confirm the station's call letters, city and the time of broadcast. I
also checked and added Peter's information for the Oregon Public
Broadcasting listing.

Some of the stations are actually in smaller cities near big cities, and
the WLIW publicists typically listed the big city rather than the small
city. If the distance seemed within a reasonable broadcast radius, I kept
the listing as the bigger city.

Now the information on my webpage should be pretty good.
https://www.tejastango.com/inside_2005archive.html#0009

For some stations, I could not confirm any programming information that
was more than two weeks into the future. I also couldn't confirm program
information for a few of the stations that do not have websites or
listings on the PBS television schedule. In a few cases, I found
conflicting information. I recommend that anyone planning to watch or
record the program confirm the broadcast date and time close to the
scheduled date and time..

Other PBS stations may plan to show the special sometime in the future. I
didn't go through and check the schedules for all PBS afilliates.

With best regards,
Steve (de Tejas)

Janet:
You forgot to mention that the program runs 2 hours. 1 hour for the documentary and one hour for fund raising.
Thank goodness I video taped it so when I play it back I can skip the fundraising. After 20 minutes of the documentary, there was 20 minutes =
of fund raising. The 20 minutes of fund raising only took 2 minutes as I set the VCR for fast forward -- or perhaps I should say, I set the VCR =
for milonga traspie.

I haven't seen the whole program yet, but so far it's all right. Music is good but not identified as vals, milonga or tango. I could understand =
how somebody would think all three dances are just one -- tango.

I'll watch the balance tomorrow.

Hey Michael,
You should have been watching it here in Pittsburgh.
Our local station had Linda (PittsburghTangueros.org)
promoting the local dance scene, and Daniel Lapadula
dancing a demonstration with our own Trini during a
pledge break.

Sean, Rocky Mountain PBS contacted Tango Colorado and asked for 12-18
volunteers to answer phones during the pledge drive in Denver this coming
Sunday, March 13th, and most or all of us plan to wear our Tango Colorado
t-shirts. I'm not sure if there will be any other promotion, but hopefully.

I've check all the listings I can, and can't find a
Cleveland, Ohio broadcast of the show. I guess we'll
have to travel somewhere to see it.....

Well, I saw the rest of the program tonight. Whether you like it or night seems to depend on how much you know about tango. I think this =
program was designed for people who know nothing or very little. For those who have been dancing at least a year, it might seem empty.

There were very few scenes where the dancing seem tied to the narration. If I had to watch the fundraising (instead of taping it and skipping =
it), WETA (the local station) would owe me a donation for waiting 20 minutes to see the program in pieces.

The best thing about the program is that it mentioned that show tango is NOT the same thing as social tango. However, I'm sure that will be lost =
by those who became "hooked" by the program.

Again, set your VCR for two hours and skip the fundraising. I wouldn't bother buying the tape.
