There is no longer active administration of the list. Tango-A is still up
and functioning...If you want to receive announcements of tango events all
around the world on this list all you need to do is remain quiet. Then as
more and more promoters see events listed they will think, "it must be okay
no one has said anything and if that event is promoted I may as well
announce my event."...It was at one time the intention that Tango-L be for
discussion and Tango-A will be for event announcements. I for one continue
to support
that, but everyone's voice should count. What do you think?

I support the exclusive use of Tango-A for announcements, and of Tango-L for
discussions. Tango-A is filtered by geographical area, a very nice feature
that allows me to simply & respectfully ignore messages about "milongas this
weekend on other continents", etc.

As Jonathan points out, this is a consensus issue, not an issue of control,
because Tango-L is currently uncontrolled. Since this is a community, it's
good for everybody to get a sense for what the local customs are. Then
announcers get to choose publicly whether or not to respect them, and accept
the consequences. For example, announcers who do not use Tango-A will find
that those of us who filter e-mails by topic may not find their
announcements in time because we group Tango-L and Tango-A messages
separately in our e-mail systems, and attend to them separately. As a
result, I missed the Tango-L announcements of the Iowa milongas until
Jonathan brought them to my attention.

In addition, it seems obvious that it is smart marketing not to annoy people
unnecessarily. Announcers who use Tango-L instead of Tango-A risk annoying
list members who are increasingly impatient with unsolicited e-mail
marketing. These annoyed listeros may at some point be potential
customers - why leave a bad taste in their mouth about your name and your
events?

It is not hard to use Tango-A, if you choose to. Instructions on how to do
so (and a request to do so!) are automatically included at the end of every
Tango-L message (including this one). Announcers who choose to ignore this
ever-present "community expression of intent" need not be surprised when
people are turned off by their marketing.

The last time I objected to an event posting, I received the same email
through 3 anonymizer services asking me "who died and made you king?".
<<<
Everybody's dark side gets to emerge once in awhile, I suppose. I am
continually amazed at the way the speed and convenience (and potential
anonymity) of e-mail lowers the "impulsiveness" threshold of personal
interactions.

>>>

Anonymous emails I receive will be deleted unread.
<<<
Since I am sure everybody's in-box these days is groaning under the deluge
of MyDoom false messages, it's just good e-mail hygiene these days to delete
anything that looks unexpected or weird. Personally, I like iHateSpam -
works great, and you never have to hear from the anonymizers again.
Anonymizers should save themselves the trouble - there's lots of ways to
have fun that offer better chance of satisfaction.

I continue to look forward to receiving announcements of everyone's events
on Tango-A!

*** and now, stand by for Tango-L's
*** = HOW TO JOIN TANGO-A = message...

All the best,

Hello
When I check my computer for Tango-L mail I get a lots of announcements
abut milongas and shows.
Since I am not going to rush and get an airplane ticket and hotel
reservation in order to dance in those places, the advertisements end up
being a nuisance, please have somebody with a higher IQ level of
intelligence in charge of the announcements.

Elemer in Redmond.
