Quite some time ago, I seem to recall a small thread about Russian
and/or Turkish tango music from the early- or mid-20th century.

If anyone can pass along the names of CDs that are good representatives
of such music, I'd appreciate it. The names of composers and/or
orchestras associated with such music would be appreciated, too.

Thanks,

Rick, for Turkish tango you would do well to check out Ibrahim Ozgur who
began recording in Istanbul in the '30s. "Mavi Kelebek" (Blue Butterfly)
is probably his most famous song. I have an excellent Ozgur CD from
Oriente called _Tangolar: The Bel Ami of Turkish Tango_. Oriente's other
Eastern tango CDs bear a closer look.

Seyyan Hanim is another Turkish tango singer you should hear; her
recordings start in the '30s as well. Restoration quality is poorer for
much of her catalog, though, as heard on Kalan's 1996 release
_Tangolar_. The songs are lovely; she has such a sweet voice.

A good introductory CD that has a sampling of various early Turkish
tango artists is _Gecmisten Gunumuze: Tangolarimiz_ released in 2000 by
Kalan.

Here's a web page with more info on the history of Turkish Tango:

Regarding Russian tango, there was a prolific Russian gent named Pjotr
Leschenko who bent the Russian rules barring him from recording tangos
by traveling to Berlin, London and Riga to put his voice on disk. The
recordings sold nicely back in Russia on the gray market and also made
Pjotr a minor hit in Europe. You can get his CDs from Oriente through
the link noted above.

Have fun!

I would also recommend Secaattin Tanyerli, most of his tangos are well
known in Turkey. So much that people can sing along to most of his
pieces.

You can find the cds online at www.turkishmusic.com

There is a modern (est. 2002) Tango Orchestra from Ankara,Turkey. Most
of the members of AGNOLIM Tango Orchestra are also great tango
dancers. They don't have a CD for purchase yet, however you can
download some samples of their diversed repertoire on their website.
www.agnolim.com

I've found that AGNOLIM has more female voice focused than many other
modern orchestras from Buenos Aires- with exception of "Orq. Las Del
Abasto".

I hope that one day they would play at Tango Festival of Buenos
Aires, together with Orq. Las Del Abasto, Orq. Silencio, and Orq.
Tipica de Tokio then people can see that Argentine Tango is not a
folk dance/music of Buenos Aires anymore but world dance and genre.

Their website is also interesting as it features a great Bandoneon-
Flash-Animation ... which note corresponds to which button ...
... afterwards for sure you know why the instrument is soooo
difficult to learn! [I use it in daily practice on new to learn
pieces to find the buttons I have to press ... =:-o ]

Abrazos tangueros!
