Women often dress up in particularly sexy cloathing to dance, in part to convince the men (who are often out-numbered) to dance with them.

Question 1): Would you go to a "Bathing Suit Milonga", where anyone wearing a bathing suit gets in for 1/2 price?

The assumption is that more men would show up because we are so drawn to female flesh, and that less woman would show up because of morale objections and/or low self esteem.

Follow up Questions:

2) What is your gender? - we need to know if 1,000 men would show up and only 10 women or vice versa.

3) Would you actually wear a bathing suit or would you pay the full price (assume Full price is $20, 1/2 price is $10)?

4) Would you be more likely to go if it was held on/near a beach/pool area, or would you still go if it was held in the dead of winter in a major city and you had to change out of your street clothes in the bath room before entering the milongo?

5) Am I a sexist male pig for even suggesting such a vile idea?

Your assumption is incorrect. Women wouldn't show up because it
would be too IMPRACTICAL! Dancing with heels over an area that could
become wet doesn't seem particularly safe. And if we wore safer
shoes, guys would still continue to lead pivots even if asked not to,
thereby creating stress on the knees.

And touching sweaty flesh is not appealing in tango.

Why is it that sexy clothing is thought to be clothing that exposes skin?
I have seen sexy clothing that exposes no more skin then ordinary clothing.
I have seen ordinary clothing that exposes more skin then sexy clothing. Tango
women are some of the sexiest women on earth with some of the sexiest clothes
yet most of these women show very little or no extra skin. Why is that?

Well I'll tell ya one thing. When trying on dancing
clothes I always have to do the "tango test" to see
how it moves on me.....

nothing like some low cut number that looks great
until you do an ocho and your boob pops out!

Ok. I can accept that. BUT I have seen some very sexy women's clothes that
are not form-fitting. In fact, many are quite loose-fitting. Loose-fitting
clothes allow a dancer to dance more comfortably. Why are these clothes sexy?

>attitude, attitude, attitude.

I would also agree with this. Sexy-ness (is this the correct spelling?) like
femininity as well as masculinity come from deep inside oneself. It depends
a lot on how a person sees his/her self as well as the world.

I'm a female...and...

To begin with, I don't think anyone gets into Tango with the thought of "oooh, I might get to see some skin!" There's many ways of attracting guys to tango, but insulting their intelligence isn't the way. And I don't think women dress sexy to "get the guys to dance with them". We do it because we feel sexy that way, which makes us feel better dancing, for ourselves...

But...I personally like the idea of a "Bathing Suit Milonga". Especially here in Miami, it sounds fun! We have dance conventions here and events here for Salsa, Hustle, and Swing where they have pool parties and beach parties where everyone's dancing outside in their bathing suits. Why can't tango be done that way? Yes, it's a modern idea, but sounds fun to me. You solve the floor problem easily by putting a portable floor down so that you can dance in your shoes if you opt to. And I don't think I've ever seen any idiot come onto a dance floor dripping wet after swimming in the pool. As a matter of fact, here in Miami we have dance floors over the top in the middle of the pool at some hotel/clubs. Actually, I'm thinking this would be an novel idea for the USTC Tango Fantasy here that we do... Randy, Lydia... what do you think?? :)

However, "Milonguero", your idea as to the pricing and cost are a little discriminatory and sexist. And illegal. You can't charge a different price just because someone decides to wear something else different than what is "suggested".

maybe...if it is a fun event where the guys show up in swim shorts or hot
and tight swim pants, too...why not? Definitely no if only the women are
expected to show up in bathing suits and the guys come all dressed.

I am female (who would have guessed that ;-) )

I would either wear a bathing suit or not show up at all.

Summer and pool would feel much better, because it would probably make me
feel more natural in bathing suit, in winter and indoors in a normal ballroom
setting I would feel very much out of place, therefore being uncomfortable and
probably for that reason not sexy looking at all.

Sexy looks has something to do with the clothing you wear. I love to dress
sexy when I go to dance tango and the guys normally appreciate it. But the
clothes have to fit the occasion (and the wearer of course). Tango clothes
should emphasize the elegance of the dancers movements. A bathing suit is not
really cut out for that normally. Therefore a dress might look x-times more sexy
when dancing tango than a bathing suit. Sexy also has something to do with
body posture and attitude. If I do not feel right in the clothes I am wearing,
I will not look sexy at all.

> 5) Am I a sexist male pig for even suggesting such a vile idea?

If you thought about making the guys show up in bathing attire, too: no, you
are just someone who has fun planning crazy and creative events. If the
thought did not even occur to you: definitely yes!

So, when it is summer in Miami or Malibou and someone says: Well lets all
get together and dance in our bathing clothes, sure, great thing, lots of fun,
I would definitely attend and probably enjoy the experience.

If it is meant as a pure flesh exosure show because that is the only way to
attract men to attend at all, I defintely would not want to be there and I
would have no interest whatsoever in meeting or dancing with these men.

Have fun,
Capella

Astrid and La guacha, you absolutely slay me! I can
always count on you to come through with flying
colors! this is the most fun topic I've seen in a long
time! Thank you "milonguero from NYC" for putting a
little pizazz into this list! :)

A friend of mine has been invited to teach some tango
lessons in a nudist colony, but his wife, and
co-instructor, has some reservations about it. We
women can be so square sometimes! :)

I'm starting to believe there's an inverse correlation between how overtly
"sexy" one dresses and the quality of the connection. Those sensual
characteristics about which Carlene wrote (attitude, responsiveness, etc.)
don't seem to be there as much among those who dress more sexually "out
there." This idea was reinforced last month in Buenos Aires, and last week
at Portland's Valentango event, where my most memorable dances (again, with
those characteristics that Carlene mentioned) we're with people whose
outward appearance was relatively conservative or even plain (and usually
well-covered).

Regarding a swimsuit milonga: If the circumstances were right (warm weather,
good nearby swimming facility or beach, and good company), I'd consider
going. But just for the sake of seeing and dancing with tango dancers in
bathing suits...forget it.

One good thing about a swim party milonga (assuming it's swimming weather),
though, would be that it would probably be well lit. ;) I've gotten really
tired of milongas that are so dimly lit you can barely see the other couples
to navigate, let alone the eyes of someone you're trying to ask.

Because, contrary to expectation, that which is concealed is often more
sexy than that which is exposed. Loose fitting allow a dancer to look
wonderful, as they flow around her on the dance floor, occasionally
revealing some curve of her body as she dances. It is her dancing that
attracts the attention, and the merest suggest of the form within that
her clothes allow that takes that skill and makes it sexy in the male
mind.

I think I'd rather be at a milonga full of average dancers in flowing
clothes than one full of good dancers in swimsuits.

Sophia Loren ( how about this for an authority!)
said, "Sex appeal is 50 percent what you've got and 50
percent what people think you've got."

So - to the guy who complained about 'false
advertising' - caveat emptor.

And to the guy who is promoting bikini tango - you
have just lost 50 percent of the appeal.

Illusory tangos to all,
