Subject: Sound/restauration quality of "Coleccion 78rpm" CD series?

Hello,

Zivals (tangostore.com) recently advertised some new CDs (with "unpublished recordings") from the "Coleccion 78rpm" series. I don't =
have any CDs from that series and several CDs contain songs that I don't have yet, so I'd be interested in getting them.

However I was wondering, how the quality of the sound/restauration in that series generally compares to other labels/series, i.e. RCA Victor =
100 Aņos, Solo Tango, EMI Reliquas or El Bandoneon.

Thanks in advance for any info on the matter,
Bernhard

Hi Bernhard,
I have over a dozen of them (green ones), and I have my eye on several more from the newly announced red ones.
I think they're great. MUCH better than El B., BATango Club and Tango Argentino, although I guess that's not much of a reference. Vargas vocals with del Piano are a HUGE improvement over El Bandoneon but again, it would be impossible to sound worse. D'Agostino/Vargas also is WAY better than on Tango Argentino.
I would say the quality of 78 rpm is at least equivalent to Reliquias. There is almost no overlap in the artists between the 78rpm and Reliquias other than some Pedro Laurenz, so it's hard to say.
RCA Victor 100 has a good rep, but hey, it's easy to make Di Sarli, D'Arienzo and Troilo sound great if you take 1950s++. Depends what you start out with, good luck having a go at those 1940s Di Sarlis. And 78rpm did a good job on them.
I just checked and I can tell you that for the few tracks in common between 100 anos and 78rpm for Orq Tipica Victor, the 78rpm sounds WAY better.
Those recordings are not exactly all unpublished. I have all the Sexteto Di Sarli on that album from other sources, and they sound great already. If you don't have them, this album is a must. I plan to go for the red Lomuto.
Among the green ones, I recommend especially both Di Sarli, Laurenz, Fresedo, and after that also D'Arienzo, OTV, Lomuto. I expect at some point they'll put out a Tanturi with a lot more Castillo; he is conspicuously sparse on the green 78rpm Tanturi.
Overall the series sounds great, has a lot of new tracks and they are well-selected.
If you ask me, go for it.

Hi Tine,

Thank you very much for your insightful comments. I've put several of
the "red" and a few of the "green" ones on my shopping list.

Best Regards,
