Charles Roques' post about CDs at Barnes & Noble
brought up a good point.

I have a small collection of tango CDs (haven't been
dancing long) that I'm looking to expand. This past
week I went to look for tango music at Tower and
Borders, and left empty-handed. Why?

1) I know the Borders in my city has the scanning
preview feature, but it doesn't work for a good number
of tango CDs. So I have no idea what they might be
like. BUT...

2) Too often I've bought tango CDs from such stores
only to be disappointed. It's really difficult to
simply look at a tango CD and say, "Hmm, this MIGHT be
good."

In a nutshell, I don't like to buy tango CDs without
hearing even a little because I literally can't afford
such a hit-or-miss approach.

That said, I've seen two heavily promoted CDs, "Buenos
Aires Cafe" and the so-called "Best Tango Album in the
World Ever." I've listened to clips in-store, and
there are some good songs among both albums, but I
haven't been completely convinced by either album to
take them home.

So I guess my question is this: are either of these
CDs worth it? What did you think of them?

A more general question: Is it worth it to buy CDs
from such stores? Is it money better spent to order
online from Zivals or the like? Sr. Roques might have
already answered this particular question, but any
other responses would be greatly appreciated.

Oh, before I forget, here's another question: has
anyone ever bought or considered buying tango CDs from
half.com? If so, what did you think? Just curious.

Thanks so much,
Linda

The Down Home Music store in El Cerrito, next to
Berkeley in California, has a nice policy about
letting people listen to 5 CD's without having to buy
anything. They have a huge selection of international
music, including tangos. I was in there the other day
and bought 11 CD/s. They let me open them all. Of
course, I bought them all, so maybe that's why. The
people there are very knowledgeable and extremely
helpful, no matter what fool questions you ask them.

Their website is downhomemusic.com. They will ship
anywhere. And if they don't have something, they'll
order it for you. But, they're not cheap.

Just looked at their website briefly for the correct
address and happened to notice some tangos I never
heard of:

CHAVEZ*OSCAR LOS TANGOS PROHIBIDOS

Have to check those out, for sure! :)
