I believe, what women mainly long for is a sense of connectedness. This is
not nessarily limited to sex, it extends to the heart and to the spirit. (I
know men who value that too, yes.)
I read somewhere that in tango "the connection can be so deep that sex would
be an intrusion". In other words, why would you go for the body, if you
already feel like you have the heart and soul ?
And therefore the tangazo depends not necessarily on whether the man is
"tall, strong, agile, great dresser, terrific
dancer, charming, caring, funny, good looking", Larry, it depends on an
inner connection that is created when you can not even see your partner, you
have almost forgotten who he is in real life because you are experiencing a
side of him that you maybe never knew was there, and that disappears from
your perception when the music stops, and you return to your real life
forms, tall, strong, charming, great dresser etc., or quiet, gentle, grey
haired, shy...

Happy Birthday, Larry

What Astrid writes suggests that a man's appearance need not be critical to
his seductiveness as a tango dancer:

>... it depends on an inner connection that is created when you
>can not even see your partner, you have almost forgotten who he
>is in real life because you are experiencing a side of him that
>you maybe never knew was there, and that disappears from your

Although Astrid quotes an opinion,

>"[T]he connection can be so deep that sex would
>be an intrusion,"

for men the sense of connectedness as a means for seduction... Sex
complements a connection in the heart and soul rather than take away from
it...

According to the stories of tango's history, tango is a mating ritual. In
a society that had fewer women than men, it was reputed to help the women
sort through the most capable men. Even in an era with equal numbers of
men and women, tango remains a "mating ritual," even though the mating is
not always consummated. The male dancers that show the most skill are the
ones that have the women after them. According to everything that I have
read about human reproductive fitness, being good at dancing should be a
relatively good signal of reproductive fitness--it requires coordination,
musicality, inventiveness, ability to create connectedness, etc.

Men tend to be more visually oriented and rely more heavily on looks to
sort through the women... Research shows that standards of good looks are
also associated with reproductive fitness. What is really more interesting
is the dancing skills required of the male tango dancer are much more
difficult feign, whereas the looks required of women can be manipulated.
It is really no surprise the women would be more discerning... Simple
biology dictates that the woman invests much more in reproduction than the
man...

An earlier discussion suggested that men have much easier ways of meeting
and impressing women than learning to dance tango, but maybe these other
means are less reliable...

Obviously it's difficult, even among established tango
dancers, to discuss openly the dark, hidden lure of
tango; the secret that all of us protect from
outsiders.

The true attraction that brings all of us out to the
milongas night after night, week after week, is
indisputably the bountiful supply of cheese.

Subject: Tango Myths - beyond Sexy and who's your Daddy

Gee-whiz, hello all:
My take on this topic is that the dance of Tango, by
it s nature and design. Is a vehicle to express what
is already there. The dance is potential, an open door
and an invitation.
By this, we as people enter into the world of
possibilities. It is the potential that each of us has
to express being sexy, sexual or sensual, violent or
peaceful, theatrical or intimate, loud or quiet,
corrupt or sublime, on and on and on.
As I get ready to dance this evening I think about the
possibilities, perhaps I will dance well, perhaps like
a baboon with 2 clubbed feet. The only thing I know is
I will be present and I will be open to listen to each
follow I dance with.
