Vals "Rosa de Oton~o" (Autumn Rose).
A friend asked me information about the lyrics of this Vals.
It is a beautiful one recorded by Carlos Gardel, December 5th. 1930 with the
orchestra of Francisco Canaro.
I made a quick translation. I thought that it may interest some of you.

ROSA DE OTOQO

----

tu me sostienes y me conduces
hacia la cumbre de tu altivez.
Tu eres constancia, yo soy paciencia,
tu eres ternura, yo soy piedad,
tu representas la independencia,
yo simbolizo la libertad.

Tu bien lo sabes que estoy enfermo
y en mi semblante claro se ve
que ya de noche casi no duermo,
no duermo nada, sabes por que...?
Porque yo sueqo csmo te aprecio,
de que a mi lado te he de tener;
son sueqos malos, torpes y necios,
pero, mi vida, que voy a hacer!

Yo sufro mucho, me duele el alma
y es tan penosa mi situacisn
que muchas veces, por buscar calma,
llevo mis dedos al diapassn.
De tu desprecio nunca hagas gala,
porque si lo haces, pobre de mi!
Quereme siempre, no seas tan mala,
Vamos, ingrata, no seas asi.

You are Life, sweet life,
full of charm and light,
You give me support and take me
to the top of your magnificence (pride, arrogance).
You are perseverance, I am patience,
you are tenderness, I am piety (mercy),
you represent independence,
I symbolize freedom.

You surely know that I am ill
my appearance clearly reveals
my almost entirely sleepless nights
I do not sleep at all, do you know why?
Because I dream how precious you are,
that I will have you at my side,
they are bad, clumsy and foolish dreams,
but, my life(darling), what can I do!
I suffer a lot, my soul hurts
my situation is so pitiful
that many times, to obtain some peace,
I play my guitar (run the fingers on the diapason).
As to your contempt, pease do not exhibit it,
because if you do,
I am lost (poor me)!
Love me always, don't be so wicked (bad),
C'mon ungrateful, don't be that way.-----

One approach to dancing to the lyrics using the first paragraph of vals
"Rosa de Oton~o" This vals is available at www.todotango.com under Gardel's
tangos.
https://www.todotango.com/spanish/main.html

From my personal notes and videotape taken from Susana Domingues tango vals
workshop given in Calgary in Febraury 1999. Susana lives in Vancouver and
has a very fine sensibility for tango and latin music.

Three ways to step and syncopate in tango vals (waltz)

1. ONE, two, three (Bang on the ONE) call out the ONE
2. one, TWO, three (more subtle and more difficult)
3. one, two, THREE (more heavier)

Then, using Susana's analysis on the vals "Rosa de Oton~o"

Vals begins:

ONE, two, three ONE, two, three
ONE, two, three ONE, two, three
ONE, two, three ONE, two, three
ONE, two, three ONE, two, three

Pause

Tu eres la vida, la vida dulce,
(ONE, two, three ONE, two, three)
llena de encantos y lucidez,
(one, TWO, three (suspend the beat))
tu me sostienes y me conduces
(ONE, two, three)
hacia la cumbre de tu altivez.
(one, two, THREE)
Tu eres constancia, yo soy paciencia,
(one, two, THREE one, two, THREE)
tu eres ternura, yo soy piedad,
(one, TWO, three one, two, THREE)
tu representas la independencia,
(one, two, THREE)
yo simbolizo la libertad.
(one, two, THREE).

I prefer the recording of Nelly Omar with Francisco Canaro from 1946.
The warm voice of N. Omar fits IMHO better to the beautifull lyrics!
This version is also better for dancing, there is more "drive" in the
orchestra.
