Dear friends from tango list

I have the law for milongas , approved by the town hall parliament of buenos aires on december 2006. It will be issued today , for legal enforce. It is a bit long to translate , since it is all in spanish.

But there is somethign interesting: one of the chapters, clearly define what kind of music will have to be played at the milonga to be considered and approved. I will translate this part , and if any of you wants the complete text in spanish, I can send it by private mail

10.7.2. Specific characteristics. There are fundamental part of the structure of the milongas the tanda of tango, milonga and vals, the tanda of other rhytms, the cortina , and the live performance or live show.
To the extent of this law, it is understood as tanda, a group of four or five pieces danceable, related to one orchestra , or different orchestras with similar style.
The cortina is the interval between tandas within a milonga. It represent a coming change of rhytm or orchestra and a refreshment for the dancers.
The live performance or show could be made by a musical group or an orchestra, that perform their repertoire for the people to dance. It also could consist in the exhibition of one or many dancing couples, with rhytms related to tango, for which purpose the dancing floor has to be left free.
The musical offer for each night will have to be no less than 70% rhymts of tango, milonga and vals.

10.7.2.- Caracter?sticas espec?ficas. Son parte fundamental de la estructura de las milongas la tanda de tango, milonga o vals, la tanda de otros ritmos, la cortina y la actuaci?n o n?mero vivo.
A efectos de esta ley se entiende por tanda el conjunto de cuatro o cinco piezas bailables del mismo ritmo pertenecientes a una misma orquesta o a varias de similar estilo.
La cortina es el intervalo entre tandas en una milonga. Indica pr?ximo cambio de ritmo o de orquesta y descanso a los bailarines.
La actuaci?n o n?mero vivo puede estar a cargo de un grupo musical u orquesta que ejecutan su repertorio para que el p?blico baile. Tambi?n puede consistir en la exhibici?n de una o varias parejas, de ritmos afines con el tango, para lo cual se deja la pista libre.
La oferta musical de cada jornada deber? ser al menos un 70% de ritmos de tango, milonga y vals.

Gee,

I wonder if "electrotango" (Tanghetto, and that ilk) would be legal
under the law of milongas in BA. (Am I a trouble maker or what? :))

Although this may seem like too much government intervention (probably
depends what the penalties are), some truth-in-advertising is welcome.
I have not heard of this being a problem in Buenos Aires, except that
once on a Saturday night I went to a 'milonga' at Nuevo Salon de
Argentina (I think that's what it's called, it's the same venue where
the El Arranque afternoon milonga is held) and there was about a half
hour of cumbia, followed by 1 tanda of tango and 1 of milonga, then a
tanda of salsa. At that point I walked out and went over to El Beso.

A few years ago in the US I had a similar experience where I went to a
'milonga' that was about 1/3 salsa/merengue. 1/3 swing, and the
remaining 1/3 of 'tango' was a mix of tango electronica, later
Pugliese (1960s, 70s), El Arranque and the like. Not one tanda of
classic tango in the 2+ hours I could tolerate this 'milonga' (I
traveled several hours to get there, needed to dance tango before I
went home). In most cases in the US this would be called an
'Alternative Milonga'. At least there's some truth in advertising in
that, although I question whether any dance event that is not
predominantly classic tango should utilize the 'milonga' label. Just
call it an 'Alternative Dance Party'.
