Hi all,
I have two questions about the vals "Mendocina":
1. Can someone tell me where I could find the
lyrics for this vals? So far, the Web turns up
nothing.
2. Also, can someone give me a summary of what
Mendoza was like at that time? In other words,
I'm looking for the historical story behind the
lyrical story.

Dear linda I could not find the lyrics of "Mendocina" in any of my tango
books so I played it and translated for you.
Mendocina
Una casita en la loma A little house on the hill
toda cubierta de flores totally covered by flowers
es el lugar de la cita Is the place of the
encounter
de los jilgeros cantores of the singing
goldfinches.
Hay una mendocina There is a Mendocina
Tan hermosa como un sol as beautiful as the sun
todos celosos le cantan they all carefully (jealously)
sing to her
toda su trova de amor their love song.
Mendocina, tan sugestiva Mendocina, so attractive
(suggestive)
y perfumada cual una flor perfumed like a flower
todas las noches y suavemente Every night, very softly
te brindan trinos su ruisen`or they offer their nightingale
warble (trill).
Sos tan linda mi mendocina You are so beautiful, my
Mendocina,
mujer divina, gracia de Dios Divine woman, God's grace

This song was written in 1944 by Benigno Palmeiro. This was a romantic
period when men would go with a group of musicians to the window of the lady
they admired to sing their love.
The lyrics of this vals is a reference to the "serenatas" as that activity
was called.
Mendoza is a beautiful province situated 1100 Km (660 miles) west from B. A.
.
As you approach the city a sign says " Welcome to the land of the sun and
the good wine".
It is situated at the foot of the majestic Andes mountains, eternally caped
by snow; in a desert full of luxurious vegetation, flowers and rich
agriculture due to artificial irrigation. There is system that guides the
snow melting waters to irrigate an extensive area. Summers are hot and
winters cool.
It is possible to visit wineries and taste the different wines, to climb and
explore the mountains, to practice sports such as horse riding, boating,
mountain climbing and exploring, white water rafting, mountain biking, etc.
It is a beautiful province and city, where you can also relax in the parks
full of friendly people, enjoy its great cuisine in its many hotels and
restaurants.

Thank you Linda and Sergio for this thread.
I've got the song playing loud and invite you all to run - don't walk - to
your collection and get out your Pedro Laurenz. His Mendocina makes the
heart soar. When that song plays and you have a partner to die for on a nice
floor, Laurenz's Mendocina absolutely transports. Joy is a beautiful thing,
isn't it?
I always try to get Linda for this song when she is visiting.

P.S.
To any not familiar with the Pedro Laurenz catalogue, may I suggest
immediately collecting and savouring it like fine wine.
At certain moments, there can not be any better music for dancing than that
provided by this Master maestro. He is so right up there - if I may say -
so sophisticated and sensual.
