Manuel Patino responded privately to my post about tango history. In
answering his email I reread some of what I wrote and realized I made a
mistake regarding the male/female ratio in turn-of-the-century Buenos
Aires. Sorry! It wasn't 14:1, more like 2:1. Or more accurately, 54,474
foreign men and 23,572 foreign women in Buenos Aires in 1869. No idea
what the figures for the locals were.
For those curious about where I got this data, I wrote a short paper
comparing the rumba and the tango in the political context. The blurb
about tango history can be found online at:
http://www.stanford.edu/~benkoh/essay.htm#Origin and development of
tango
and the references I used to support my text are listed at:
http://www.stanford.edu/~benkoh/essay.htm#References
The thesis of the paper is my own conjecture based on my research and is
by no means authoritative, but the factual bits are drawn from other
published texts. Those interested in learning more may find these
references informative.

For those who are interested and/or curious, I have just finished the first
of a four-part series on the history of Tango for the internet ezine "Smooth
Moves" which can be accessed at: oakebooks.com/ezine/index.php
The first part, which is now available, covers the period from the later part
of the 1800's to about 1910 and examines the early formative years and the
musical and cultural influences. The second will examine the years 1910 to about
1928, the third the "Golden Age" up to 1950 and the last from 1950 and after.
They will be published quarterly with the second installment appearing
around Sept. They are not long or encyclopedic but are instead meant to touch on
some highlights of the history. Enjoy.
(There may be a few typos...please excuse.)
