Tango is indeed alive in Montevideo, but not exactly easy to find. I have not seen many up-to-date listings of them on the Ineternet.

For those who are thinking of visiting, here are some places:

Cafe Tabaris: Very nice old house converted into a cafe/restaurant/milonga. In one room, a metal grill lets you see into the cellar in the basement. Another part of the house has a great sky-light made with stained glass. It is in this room where the classes and dancing takes place. There is usually something going on during the weekend.

Dancing on Saturdays alternate between Chique and La Junta. Chique has been under "new management" since Dec 2002. It has a nice wooden floor in an otherwise non-descript building, at least at night. I've never been in the area during the day. La Junta is run and hosted by one of the best and most popular teachers in Montevideo, Omar, possibly with a partner. The space is on the second floor of an old building. Its worth your while just to go and enjoy the atmosphere of this turn of the (last) centry space.

Addresses, and much more very interesting information, both on Tango and on Montevideo itself, can be found on the page https://www.tango.montreal.qc.ca/voyagesp.htm. Unfortunately, it is in Spanish.

I am very bias, but MVD is definitely worth the trip. Go there for the sight and culture, with tango thrown in every now and then. One more bonus, and credit to the Uruguayan government. All government run galleries and museums are free.

Hope you make it there next time.
