Subject: US tango energy/great time in Washington DC last weekend

Last weekend Anne-Sophie Ville (with the help of the tango community in
DC) organized a fantastic event in Washington DC that really highlighted
the energy and talent for tango within the US. People from both the
west and east coasts were there, very fine social dancers who have an
uncanny way of showing up anytime an event is put together that focuses
on dancing and a low-key, "let's get along and dance" attitude (or lack
of attitude?). It is so refreshing to attend an event that truly puts
the dancers out in front and highlights the local dance venues and
spirit of the host community (much the way the legendary tangofests in
Portland do). All the visitors were raving about how welcome the
various hosts made them feel. The event featured US instructors and DJs
with the exception of Luciana Valle from Bs As, who teaches regularly
throughout the US, and they are all among the finest instructors to be
found anywhere. The milongas were well-attended, really energetic, and
once again an example that people with many ways of dancing tango can
get along very nicely on the same floor, and that DJs with an open mind
and firm focus on the dancers can be creative and raise the activity of
DJing to an art form with spectacular results.

I am always struck by those dancers (men and women) who really embrace
each other, really dance their own internal dance in their own
individual way, and add a positive energy to the dance floor. When you
get a room with many of these types of people dancing, the magic happens
where the collective energy of the mass of dancers takes everyone to a
different level. Leaders connect with each other with knowing glances,
the followers are relaxed and totally comfortable, and at times I could
not help but smile uncontrollably while I was dancing for the beauty of
it all. I was reminded several times during the weekend that this is
what really matters in the dance.

It is an absolute pleasure to be connected with such a vibrant national
and international network of artists and amazing people. Thanks,
Anne-Sophie, for a great party, and thanks to everyone else who made the
DC Marathon a landmark event.

With deep appreciation -

Subject: Gotan concert, Washington DC

Last night's Gotan concert, at the 9.30 Club, was packed, about 950 people, standing room only, 20-30 something crowd, curious about tango music, even in Gotan's form. (Wish someone was handing out flyers about the tango scene in Washington: surely some in the audience would have followed up)

Many in the audience tried to "keep the beat" (alternate raising of arms, body shakes, head bobbing, foot tapping, attempts at salsa/merengue etc etc) to Gotan's techno type interpretations, but were beaten by tango's musical structure, which survived the Gotan treatment. It was interesting to watch their befuddlement when the rhythm, to the lay ear at least, "disappeared", "paused", "changed", etc etc.

Good wishes.

Michael,

Washington DC has a thriving tango scene. Here's a partial list of
milongas...

Tuesday night milonga at Ascot's, 17th and L.
Thursday night milonga at Eastern Market, Capitol Hill

Friday night milonga (2nd and last Friday) at Tyson's Sports Club

Saturday night milongas:
1st Saturday of the month: Jewish Community Center, 16th and Q
2nd Saturday of the month: Du Shor Dance Studio, Bethesda
4th Saturday of the month: Chevy Chase Ballroom, Chevy Chase

There are more; those are just my favorites. You can get a full tango
calendar at http://www.le-tango.com and a few other web sites.

Hope that helps.

Yes, there's an active Tango scene in the nation's capital.
A useful web page is

The capital tangueros puts a weekly electronic newsletter of
events.

Michael,
Yes Washington DC has an active tango scene. Moreover, it's easy
to learn about milongas and lesson in the area, thanks to a handful of
dedicated web hosts. They maintain the Capital Tangueros weekly listings
of weekly and special activities, as well as an easy-to-use calendar. We
are very fortunate to have such good organization. I wish there were a
group in BsAs who would make it so easy to find tango activities.

Hola Tango-L.

This tango fool from Colorado is traveling again - this time to Washington DC. My job will be 2 blocks from the White House on
New York Avenue. I expect it to take me 1-1/2 - 2 weeks and will attend as many milongas as I can during this time.
I'm hoping to find someone in the city that has a spare bedroom they'd be willing to rent to me. Staying with someone would
be cheaper so that I could attend milongas and also if I get done sooner it's easier to leave when not tied down with a priceline
hotel contract. I am planning on arriving on or very near June 11th and leaving hopefully no later than June 25th.
I have no problem changing houses mid-way if need be. Please e-mail me at tango@springssauna.com with any housing offers
you may have and any schedules for milongas for those days.

Thank you very much

JK

I will be visiting Washington DC from September 29 to October 4 - and I
am looking for someplace to dance, and maybe a private class or
two......

I have been looking at the calendar, but I know that it is sometimes
easier for strangers in some places more than others - which is why I
like to go someplace with a lesson before the milonga so I can meet
some other dancers. If anyone can suggest particular teachers,
milongas, practicas, etc. that would be great. If anyone knows that
they'll be going to tango and is willing to include me as a guest - I
will promise to do the same if you ever visit Western New York. :) I
am particularly interested in going to the outdoor milonga has any
suggestions -
