Hola The List,

This new thread is fodder for my blog, so if you reply I may blog your
response.

My hypothetical question is . . .

"If a Tango Dancer from New York City goes to Buenos Aires and wants
to dance in a Milonga where they can dance just like they dance back
home, where would they go?"
Gracias,

But Neil
why not DANCE IN NYC if you want to capture that special feeling?!
When in Rome... ie: Bs As, dance as if you are a Porte?o.
Truth is, most of the milongas there are full of NYers at all times,
so no need to worry. As well, most of the milongas in NY are always
full of Argentines. Still, the two cities have their own distinct
flavors. Viva la difference!

Dear Neil,
Why on earth would one want to travel all that way and take precious vacation days, only to "dance like they do back home"?

Well, remember when Germans used to travel all the way to Mallorca or
Pataya, only to drink Nescafe and eat Wiener sausages in better weather?

Actually, if you go to BsAS and want to enjoy it, you should forget about any reference you have and go with an open mind, with your eyes and ears wide open and with your legs... relaxed !!!!

Because New Yorkers think they're the center of the tango universe?.... ;-)

The question is interesting, because it could be made a comparison as what do we mean with "Bs As" and what do we mean with "NYC"

Both are references to cities that really does not exist .

Bs As could be seen as a " line crossing the horizon" as french architect Le Corbusier described it when arrived by ship to riverport .
Also as something that is a sorrounding scarcely green fields with increasingly urban spots as well as the airplane takes their final landing to Ezeiza airport .
Once foot is being set at destination within town , highways , streets, hotels , more streets, people here and there , traffic chaos , honks , newspaper vendors shouting, pneumatic hammers hitting the tarmac , and maybe a tango at loudspeakers, out from music stores longing for customers. Smells of bakery, meat, vegetables, rice ,smoke from the coffees at the cafeterias and out of the lungs of smoking coffee sippers. People talking , reading newspapers, books, walking with mp3 pods , on rollers , skateboard, bycicyles, small motorbikes called"deliveries" carrying pizza,. icecreams, medical prescriptions, whatever could be confined into the rear side box .

NYC could be seen as .... a line of skycrapers if you came to Manhattan borough by road. Or a seaport in a island if you came by ship. Or sea arriving to a beach arriving to a huge airport (JFK) or a smaller friendly one (La Guardia).
Once foot is set at destination, copy all that has been said in the previous paragraph, at least for Manhattan .
Staten island looks more alike our Vicente Lopez NE great buenos aires area near the Rio de la plata , without the ferries of Port Authority
Bronx could be ..... Like a ride in Tren de la costa from stations Borges to San Isidro, stepping down and making some walking .
Queens could be ... like some parts of Belgrano and/or Villa Urquiza
Harlem ... like Dock Sud, but there are differences , afroamerican people on dock sud is from Cabo Verde mostly , and they have been arriving for the past 30 years only , massively.
Brooklyn could be like ..villa del parque and/or villa devoto.

So, if you are from NYC , you will find yourself in Bs As as home, totally deja vu effect :)

Where to dance is not a demanding question finally.

In Alice in Wonderland tale, while Alice is looking for a way out , asks to the Cheshire cat ( that is quite alike our president Kirchner, no one knows while he is smiling always) for directions , quote "

'Cheshire Puss,' she began, rather timidly, as she did not at all know whether it would like the name: however, it only grinned a little wider. 'Come, it's pleased so far,' thought Alice, and she went on. 'Would you tell me, please, which way I ought to go from here?'

'That depends a good deal on where you want to get to,' said the Cat.

'I don't much care where-' said Alice.

'Then it doesn't matter which way you go,' said the Cat.

I agree Joanne, there really isn't any reason to go south of Franklyn Street.

Guau!
What an interesting thread!
I assume that EVERYONE who responded HAS danced in NYC AND Bs As.
Actuallly I was looking for specifics like Club Sunderland or Sin Rumbo or
Villa Urquiza . . .
BTW I'm from ATLANTA where we try to dance more Milonguero than the
Milongueros.
We are under the influence of El Beso.
Horacio calls it Milonguerismo.
Chau,
Neil
