1 - Because after learning several different tango styles I prefer close
embrace.

Because I like the closeness to my partner that allows an intense
communication and a better interpretation of the music.

2 - Because I learned only this style. I was convinced that this was the
only possible way to dance tango socially, actually I ignored that there
were other tango styles.

3 - Because I only learned this style and it is the way everybody dances in
the club where I go.

4 - Because after trying different styles I decided that this is the best
for my age and my dancing skills.

5 - Because it is danced in most milongas in Buenos Aires. I decided that
the dancers of other styles have problems dancing socially (collisions,
disturbing other dancers), so I decided that this must be the only possible
way to dance socially. Although we have plenty of room to dance, we imitate
the crowded conditions of Buenos Aires.

6 - Because that is the style my partner prefers.

Can you give any other reasons?

Sergio

Yeah, it's a way easier style to dance when you're
drinking because you don't have to think as much as with
fancy nuevo steps, and you can just enjoy the music and
go with the right-brained flow. This is particularly
true in Amsterdam for obvious reasons.

7. I have a stain on the front of my shirt I don't want anyone to see.
Between dances I just fold my arms across my chest.

8. I have bad breath and I'd rather breathe over her shoulder than in her
face.

9. She has bed breath and I'd rather she breathe over my shoulder than in my
face.

10. I like the taste of hair.

11. My chest is cold.

12. I want to check out and cabaceo other women while dancing.

13. I don't want her to see me wince and roll my eyes when she misses a
perfectly good lead.

14. I like the feel of implants.

15. I don't have very good balance and it helps if someone is holding me up.

16. I want to look for change on the floor.

17. Because it pisses people off when I say it is the most authentic tango
embrace.

7 Because I feel the most comfortable that way.

8 Because almost every man who enters the dance floor with me, when I hold
up my left arm, moves in on me and embraces me closely, even when they don't
do that with other women.

9 Because it is the only way in which tango, the way I understand it, makes
any sense.

Because it's easier for me to feel his lead.

And because he smelled great.

And because it feels good.

I dance close embrace when music is suitable for close embrace, or when I am
tired of open embrace.
I dance open embrace, when music is suitable for open embrace, or when I am
tired of close embrace.

And I dance close if my partner wishes so.

Igor.

Igor:
Please give me some examples of music suitable for close embrace and open embrace. I don't understand. I admit my bias for the "good stuff" what some called "traditional." I don't dance open nor desire to dance open, regardless of the music. I'd rather pass on a tanda than to dance open.

My observation, not based on scientific sampling, is that those who dance close are more interested in connection and those that dance open seem to be more interested in figures.

Thank you, Michael for a good question!
Well, as you can guess I believe there is music suitable mostly for close
embrace, mostly for open embrace, and both.

Here is the example of music suitable for both: Bacan Fulero of Lomuto, El
Flete of Canaro ( Here we are: 4 styles of dancing already )
It is difficult for me to find a good way to dance open with Biagi music.
Pedro Laurenz though is good for both.

It is difficult sometimes to find how to dance close with most of the music
played at Neo parties: modern one. So, open. And different open than to
Bacan Fulero, El Flete, or Pugliese. Salsa, Swing, Blues, Rumba and the like
can be easily danced in close ( hence they also can be danced in both :) )

I do not want to guess what other people dancing in open and close are
interested in mostly,
but I am looking for connection in both. And I have one! How otherwise can I
dance!? Good connection is not enough: what about body feeling, your own and
your partner? Rhythm, musicality, creativity, charm, surprise, drive, just a
fun of it, enjoyment of music? It all ads up. Yes, yes, in open too,
Michael. But connection is a cornerstone of any dancing.

Figures are just tools, patterns. Once one starts dancing improvising to the
full extent, he discovers that patterns exist besides anybody's will. They
can be discovered.

Igor.

I'd object to the wording. Certainly, people enamoured with figures
will tend to dance open (which means *some* who dance open will seen
to be more interested in figures), but not everyone dancing open is
uninterested in the connection. I'd also replace "those that" by
"some *who*" - I don't think an open embrace is dehumanising enough
to merit the use of the object gender ;).
