Subject: Ada Falcon Died - The mistery of her life a new tango movie
The tango singer Ada Falcon a friend and companion of Carlos Gardel, Enrique
Santos Discepolo and Francisco Canaro died today in a retirement home in the
hills of Cordoba. She was 96 years old. Her remains will be taken to Buenos
Aires to be buried in the Mausoleum destined to famous artists at
TheChacarita Cemetery.
She was born in Buenos Aires in 1905, started to act in theater as a
little girl (11 years old) being known as "la joyita argentina" (the little
Argentinean jewel). At age 13 she took part in her first movie "El festin de
los Caranchos" (1918).
She worked in numerous musical shows and also as an actress in different
theaters and movies .
In 1925 she makes her first tango recordings as a soloist with the Orchestra
of Osvaldo Fresedo for Victor Records.
She became very famous as the singer of Francisco Canaro with whom she had a
turbulent romantic relationship. During this period she dedicated her entire
effort to tango as a singer producing more than 100 recordings.
She had beautiful green eyes. It was that inspired by them Canaro composed
his only Vals "Que me han hecho tus ojos?"
(What did your eyes have done to me?)
She was a Mezzo-Soprano which was an unusual register for tango singers at
the time who generally had a very sharp voice.
Became very wealthy, enjoyed luxury, furs expensive jewelry and fame, she
lived in a beautiful three story house in the beautiful neighborhood of
Palermo. She was at the highest point in her artistic life. From 1930 to
1942 she made more than 200 recordings.
Then she suddenly withdrew from public life, remained isolated in her house
avoiding all contact with the external world.
She occasionally left the house to go to mass all dressed in black, the face
covered by a net or by sun glasses, wearing a white turban and white
gloves.
With this attire she entered and left church... on her knees. (1942) She
was only 37 years old. The cause of all this is a mystery... she never
talked about it. It seems that love disappointments with Canaro could have
been an important element.
After a while she became a "tertiary nun" and entered an isolated convent in
the hills of Cordoba where she lived as a pauper by her own volition (a
small cell, little furniture, frugal meals) till she was transferred at an
advanced age to a retirement home due to health reasons.
Sergio Wolf is at present embarked in a project to make a documentary about
her life. She never allowed pictures to be taken since 1942 and gave rare
interviews but for the first time at age 95 allowed the filmmakers an
interview . This documentary will be based on movie archives, ill reflect
the best period of our tango and who knows... it may help to elucidate the
Mystery of Ada Falcon's life...then we have to remember that it was common
at her time for women to fall in love only once...
