"... The rhythm also has to do
with a certain way of living. That's why it's much
harder for foreigners to do milonga than tango."
About four or five years ago I was taking a small group of American friends
for their first trip to Buenos Aires.
The first night we went to a practica in San Telmo hosted by Jorge and
Aurora Firpo .
We arrived somewhat late, everybody was dancing except for a lady across the
floor.
A couple attracted my attention and I pointed to my friends, -Do you see
that is what I was talking about, the posture, the rhythm, the musicality,
the intense concentration, the facial expression: the epitome of the
porten~o dancer - I said. They are the embodiment, the incarnation the
personification of what we were discussing before.
The music stopped. The couple whose dancing we were admiring came to our
table... They were from ...California!.:)
That was there Buenos Aires visit number 11. They danced better than any one
else in that room.
The music started again they all went to dance, I saw the lady across the
floor and decide to go and talk to her.
-Hi !- I said - Do you know how to dance?- She started to laugh... stood up
removing her glasses and responded - Of course I know how to dance!- you did
not recognize me because I am wearing these new glasses - She was Maria
Nieves - Carlos Copes partner of so many years. I still have with me the
sublime feeling of that tango, the only one I ever danced with her.
