thanx so much michael for sending that article -

i was especially excited because i have recently discovered ice skating
myself. i was walking by bryant park in nyc a few months ago and heard
tango music! there was a temporary rink set up and i slapped on some of
those awful plastic rental skates and went for it.

i have gotten totally hooked. i love being outside and the challenge of
falling with every step. i just go round and round in circles at this
point and like tango - i can't get enough of it. its scarier than tango
(even though i had a meltdown on every milonga floor in nyc when i
first started) because i am not that good at it and it doesnt come
naturally to me. i approach it though, like i do tango, as an inner
experience. i like that it is a solitary experience but the component
of having a partner - another person - which naturally pushes you to be
confronted with your own potential, is missing.

i am going to bring some tango music tomorrow nite to wollman rink to
see if the dj there will play it.

dick button has always bothered me with his negative comments mostly
about everyone EXCEPT AMERICANS and i dont care for any competitive
sports so i wonder again...why compete if (from the article------>) "
he sees as an emphasis on tricks over graceful skating... That's not
beautiful. That's just cut-cut-back. You have to be kind to the ice.
You have to caress the ice . . . Skating is all about flow, edging, the
beauty of the motion."

sound familiar?

I too am an ice skating addict. It is fun, isn't it?! It is even
competing with tango for my attention right now :). In fact, right now it
is winning...

For a partner component, try ice dancing. That's a thrill, a challenge.
There is more emphasis on memorizing a series of moves as it would be too
dangerous to improvise, more or less, on an ice "floor".
