Subject: Buenos Aires tips for women tourists in general?

Hi everyone,

I'm happily planning my first trip to Buenos Aires! Please forgive me if you're tired of this type of question, but I would personally be very grateful for your thoughts, ideas, suggestions, etc., for a woman traveling there alone.

Specifically, I've heard both good and bad stories about taxi drivers and tourists, and I have no sense of what is the reality, so at the moment, my biggest question is how would I get home after a milonga, and is it ok to walk?

I have in mind that if I stay in the center, and within say 10 streets of one milonga or another, I can walk. In this way, if I end up not having the gumption to deal with late night taxi rides, I can still be sure that I will at least be able to go out somewhere a few nights. Any thoughts on whether this is a good idea or a bad one, or even necessary, would be very much appreciated. Obviously, I'm aiming for things to work out better than this, this is just a plan to make the best of my worst-case-scenario and useful in helping me choose where to stay.

I really appreciated Janis' recent post about the codes and invitations to dance, and all the subsequent viewpoints posted; they've all been very interesting and helpful!

Oh, and for what it's worth, I'm working to perfect my command of basic Spanish...

Thank you very much.

Terri
