What do people think about the following as a Charity idea:
Dance Auctions: Good dancers/teachers auction off the right to dance with
them for one tanda. All to be done at midnight, so that a single rich person
could not monopolize all the dances.
Money to go to a deserving charity of course.
Should it be for only a single song? more than one tanda? Would it not work
at all?
There are 10 kinds of people, those that understand Binary and those that
don't.

I don't really like that idea because personally I
wouldn't want to pay for someone to dance with me, it
feel demeaning.
But I can tell you about a charity idea that was very
sucessful in Portland. It was called Embracing
Argentina and we raised money for childrens charities
in Argentina. We had a dance-a-thon. Each of us
sought out sponsors, from inside or outside the dance
community and asked them to donate a $ amount per
dance that we had that night. So my mom, or friend or
whoever would say, okay Rose, I'll give $1 for every
dance or sometimes they would say I'll give up to $50
or whatever. Then when we went to the milonga we all
received a dance card. Each time we danced with
someone we had them sign our card and then the dances
were tallied at the end of the night. This way
everyone could participate and everyone was involved.
I believe we raised several thousand dollars. If you
are interested in more details I can get you in touch
with the people that orgainzed it here.
Regards,
Rose

Any idea for charity is good. There's no risk, so just go right ahead. I'm
sure most dancers / teachers are good humoured enough to dance a tanda for a
good cause and most tango dancers are kind-hearted enough to reach into
their pocket.
Three years ago we started Milonga Para Los Niņos (tm), an annual dance to
raise money for underprivileged children in Argentina and other parts of
South America. We felt that Tango and Latin dance had given us so much joy
that we should repay Argentina and South America with a little effort and by
touching the hearts of people who love Tango and Latin dance. It has been
very successful. We hope to run MPLN in 8 cities this year. We now do a
New Years Eve milonga, produce some merchandise, run auctions and this year
an art show with art donated by local well-known artists. The organisers do
not get paid and we distribute our help direct to wonderful people who give
their lives for the future of children in their countries. We are raising
up to Aus$10,000 per annum. We buy much needed equipment that you and I
take for granted, like beds, light bulbs, warm blankets, cooking utensils
and appliances, for homes, shelters and new-start organisations such as a
farm that takes in street-kids and teaches them organic farming techniques.
Anyone who would like to help by running a milonga or adding $5 to the door
of your regular milonga once a year, we would love you to email us and we
will accredit you.

Go ahead A. Coleman. You can do anything.
