Confiteria Ideal has a milonga practically every day of the week, and is
popular among portenos and tourists alike. It was a location for movies of
Alan Parker ("Evita") and Carlos Saura ("Tango").
Ideal was constructed in 1912. Last Friday it received a subsidy of $59,000
pesos from the secretary of culture of the city of Buenos Aires as part of
the renovation program of notable bars. The work includes restoration of
the bronzes, marble, stain glass ceilings, marble floors and the roof.
As part of the renovation program, the secretary of culture released "Cafes
de Buenos Aires", a book investigating the history of 38 notable bars of the
city with photographs. Cafe Tortoni, Los 36 Billares, La Giralda, La Biela
and El Britanico are part of the program.

When we were in Buenos Aires in March, it had recently been announced that Confiteria Ideal had received a grant for some much-needed =
restoration. I hope what you saw was the first stages. As anyone who has been through a renovation project knows, things get very ugly before =
they become beautiful again!
