Thanks all of you who wrote me back in public and private with suggestions
and comments on dance floors. I have heard from some people who sell
flooring that an engineered floor such as natural bamboo or exotic brazilian
woods over a cork underlayment over concrete would work well in a dance
floor application. Any ideas or comments on that?

Thanks,

Manuel

Hola Manuel,

I've specified bamboo floors on a number of projects.
It is consistently a very reliable product. It is
harder than most woods (including oak and "Brazilian
Cherry") so will last longer. This is my first choice
for dance floors.

A limiting factor on most engineered floors is the
number of times that they may be refinished. That is
directly related to the thickness of the surface
veneer. For longest life, it must extend to the top of
the tongue (at least 0.2" or 5mm). Bamboo flooring is
homogenous, so this is not a factor.

The floor finish should include aluminum oxide to
maximize the life of the finish. I prefer prefinished
flooring because the quality is more consistent.
However, prefinished floors usually have micro beveled
edges, which will not affect dancing, but might be
aesthetically objectionable.

Cork is a great choice for a cushion, but rubber may
be less expensive. Either is adequate for this
application. Cork is environmentally sustainable;
synthetic rubber is not.

You will get best results if the floor is not attached
to the concrete slab, but rather "floats" on top of
it.

If the concrete slab is below grade, I recomend you
hire an engineer or architect to evaluate the
situation.

Sean

What about a dance floor in the tropics?? Heavy humidity and lots of
bichos (termites). We are almost resigned to polished concrete -- any
better suggestions?
