Subject: De Angelis & merry go round music
Dear friends from Tango list
I keep thinking about the comment of music from De Angelis as " merry go round music" , that is still used as an expression in Buenos Aires.
I made some enquiries , and this is what I can say now, while I am still have to receive some precisions
1) De Angelis had a huge success at a daily radio broadcast , the "Glostora Tango Club" , during the 1950 s . During those years , the radio was the family entertainment, since the television started on a commercial basis on the 1960 s.
2) There is a not very clear comment, that music from De Angelis was used at the merry go round/ carrousels. This merry go round facilities were not owned by a single person , and there were not united in a syndicate , so it sounds very weird, that all in a sudden,. all merry go rounds started to play this music.
3) The music facilities of this merry go round were very limited ,some of them were imported, and came with "organitos" or small mechanical pianos that played endlessly the same tune , usually nursery rhimes or carols. There are some of this "organitos" and/or mechanical pianos at the museo del organito in Buenos Aires.
4) Maybe , and this is a big MAYBE, the owners of the merry go round amused themselves listening the radio while the merry go round was opened , since Glostora Tango Club was a late evening broadcast, before the soap radio opera "Los Perez Garcia" that was also a hit. Glostora was the name of a famous grease+shine that men use those days (1950 s) for their hair.
As a side research, I have a look at the files of the town hall , to see wether was something concerning tango or merry go round music. What I find is a kind of new law that abolish some existing regulations (penalties) that were remaining as far as from 1858 . Since Buenos Aires has a special legal status as autonomous city , this works to rewrite existing laws are a bit slower.
This were general street minor offences and/or agressive noises and/or not proper public behaviour , that were not allowed to do in public /at the streets/ at public places . Infractions were controlled by the police ,and fines were paid or pocketed by the controllers (who controls the controllers, as the greek said) . Now (year 2003) , the city authorities are making some changes , but police forces are still depending from the national government , so everything is a bit messy.
Any of you that read this prohibitions now cancelled, may be tempted to ask if it is possible to do now what was previously forbidden . I say , why not ?? :):):) It could be a good experiment when visiting Buenos Aires:):) Just in case , I live near precinct 23rd of Palermo , give me a call if need to take you out :):)
