The Anibal Troilo orchestra played a less complex dance music during the
golden age of tango, but it shifted to a more intellectualized concert
sound by the 1950s. Troilo's recordings from the concert era seem to have
much better fidelity than those from the 1940s.
Some Troilo CDs with a relatively high quality transition/concert era sound
are Sus Ultimos Instrumentales on the Tango Argentino label, Troilo for
Export on the BMG label, 20 Exitos on the BMG label and Quejas de Bandoneon
on the EMI Odeon label. The latter may no longer be available, and should
not be confused two other CDs of the same name on the El Bandoneon and
Music Hall labels. The second CD has all three of the songs that Clayton
mentions.
The track listing on Sus Ultimos Instrumentales (Tango Argentino) is El
Baqueano, La Trilla, Mi Refugio, Adios Bardi, La Racha, Tinta Verde,
Piropos, Ojos Negros, Pa Que Bailen Los Muchachos, Nobleza de Arrabal,
Naipe Marcado, Entre Suenos, Tallador, Che Buenos Aires, A Orlando Goni, Mi
Viejo Reloj, Milonguero Triste, Adios Nonino, Compadrita Mia, Seleccion de
Julio De Caro.
The track listing on Troilo for Export (BMG) is Responso, A Mis Viejos, La
Bordona, Danzarin, La Cumparsita, Don Juan, Los Mareados, Verano Porteno,
El Marne, Nobleza de Arrabal, Pa Que Bailen Los Muchachos, Mi refugio, De
Puro Guapo, El Africano, Recuerdo.
The track listing on 20 Exitos (BMG) is La cumparsita, A Mis Viejos, La
Bordona, Responso, El Marne, Los Mareados, Verano Porteno, Pa Que Bailen
Los Muchachos, Don Juan, Tierrita, Recordando a Discepolo, Nocturna, El
irresistible, Bandola Triste, Adios Bardi, Tinta Verde, Ojos Negros,
Milontango, Nostalgico, Lo Que Vendra.
The track listing on Quejas de Bandoneon (EMI Odeon) is Quejas de
Bandoneon, La Ultima, El Metejon, Malon de Ausencia, Tinta Verde, Yo Tengo
un Pecado, Nuevop, Lo Que Vendra, Pa Lo Que Te Va a Durar, La Vuelta del
Montonero, Aguante Casimiro, La Bordona, Aquel Tapado de Armino.
By the way, the Tango Argentino and Solo Tango CDs of early Troilo
recordings have higher fidelity than that found on many other releases of
Troilo's earlier recordings. In particular, I would recommend, Sus
Instrumentales on the Tango Argentino label and Troilo/Fiorentino (vol. 1)
on the Solo Tango label for the classic dance era recordings of the Troilo
orchestra.

I recently purchased a new CD of Troilo's music. It is one of the new "RCA
100 Anos" series and it has the best fidelity of any Troilo CD that I have
heard. I don't have the track listing with me at the moment, but Danzarin
is definitely on it. The rest of the selections are all great for dancing
and when I first played the CD, I had to put it back on right away and
listen to it again.
I also have the Di Sarli and the D'Arienzo from that series and they are
also have excellent sound and a track selection that really makes you want
to dance.
I am not an technical audio expert, but it sounds to me that these CDs were
just wonderfully cleaned up. It does not sound like there has been an echo
or fake stereo or anything added. They just sound very clear without any
hissing or crackling etc.
These CDs are available at:
https://www.classictango.com/ in the USA or
https://www.tangostore.com/ in Argentina
I have dealt with both and they both offer excellent customer service and
quick shipping.

I am not sure what could be Troilo recordings that Clayton heard in MP3.
But, since Danzarin is mentioned , there is a strong possibility that the
arrangements
of this songs have been made by Julian Plaza.
Julian Plaza is an excellent pianist, bandoneonist , compositor and arranger
for other
musicians , including Anibal Troilo.
He was born in 1928 and is still alive an kicking. Some weeks ago, he join a
gathering
of musicians including Beba Pugliese , to celebrate an anniversary of the
first performance of Osvaldo Pugliese.
Julian Plaza was a key member of Osvaldo Pugliese orchestra, and also Miguel
Calo.
He later made a sexteto, and also a group of four bandoneons playing "a
capella".
To be a pianist and a bandoneonist, I think, gave Julian Plaza an unique
feeling of music , which
is lively noticed at his arrangements.
"Danzarin" is part of a series of tangos with a kind of "tematic" pattern ,
the series after "Danzarin" continues
with "Sensiblero", " Melancolico" , "Nostalgico" & "Disonante"
There are also a series of milongas, such as "Payadora" ( superbly played by
Berlingieri trio: Berlingieria
at piano, Leopoldo Federico at bandoneon and Cabaros at bass),
"Dominguera","Nocturna" & "Morena".

The following posting is a follow up on the recent discussion regarding
Anibal Troilo. I had to re-submit it since the original never went through
because of a "glitch" in the system a week ago.

Hello Tango-L,
My good friend Stephen Brown omitted 2 selections (I`m sure a slight
oversight on his part) "Danzarin"/track #9 & "Melancolico"/track # 12 from
the track listing that he graciously gave us for the new
RCA 100 ANOS/Anibal Troilo CD. Thus, all 3 tangos that Clayton
Beach was inquiring about are contained on this particular CD.
The track listing is: Responso, Los Mareados, La Cumparsita, Don Juan, La
Bordona, Nostalgico, A Mis Viejos, El Irresistible, (Danzarin), Tierrita,
Mi Refugio, (Melancolico), B.b. , Pa' Que Bailen Los Muchachos, Nocturna Lo
Que Vendra, Verano
Porteno, Adios Nonino, Pichuqueando, Nocturno A Mi Barrio.
There are actually 2 Troilo CDs from the new RCA 100 ANOS series; the other
one contains the following 23 tracks: Yo Soy el Tango, Barrio de Tango,
Tristezas de la calle Corrientes, Uno, Maria, Cristal, Palomita Blanca,
Naranjo en Flor, La Noche que Te Fuiste, Sur, El Ultimo Organito, Carnaval,
Garua, La Ultima Curda, Como se Pianta la Vida, Y a mi Que, Ninguna,
Desencuentro, Frente al Mar, Sombra Nada Mas, El Motivo, Che Bandoneon,
Fueye.
Another excellent CD by Anibal Troilo from his later recordings is
"Argentina to the World"/EMI-94432-2. It`s interesting to note that both EMI
& BMG possess his later recordings. There are 6 outstanding instrumentals on
this particular disc: Quejas de Bandoneon (best version), Danzarin, Retirao
(written by Facundo`s father), La Bordona (if any tango has 2 superb
versions, this is it along with the one by Osvaldo Pugliese), Lo que Vendra
(Piazzolla classic beautifully arranged by Troilo with violins), &
Inspiracion - this particular version is the one used by Daniela Arcuri &
Armando Orzuza for their "Solo Tango" performance (videoed in black & white)
in which they are both dressed in all white attire, still my favorite
routine to watch. They also danced the same at the first ever Hollywood Bowl
Tango production before 50,000 fans/"Tango Magic" weekend 1998.
Best regards always,
Mark Celaya
