All right I've had it. (Rant enabled)
This weekend I'll be in Bs.As. I'll go to a milonga and sit and fight for my
first dance. At the end of that dance, the gentleman will stand away from
me, look at me again, and whisper "Argentine?!?!" in a voice with the same
level of surprise as if the family dog started reciting Shakespeare. Yes - I
am blond with green eyes and straight hair.
No, I am not Argentine and I will never be mistaken for one on looks or
accent. But it appears that I can dance like one.
Meanwhile, the challenged dancer from Milwaukee will be asked to dance
repeatedly by lots of different guys as soon as she arrives. Why? She has
dark curly hair and dark eyelashes.
I have had incredible tangos with Europeans and N. Americans, and incredibly
bad tangos with Argentines. I believe that your nationality is no predictor
of your ability to dance.
So I would be pleased and proud if those fellow tourists there ask me to
dance. It can only enhance my experience.
Don't judge. The person you cheat will be yourself.
OK - I feel better now.

Dear Lois:
Your quote below:
"I have had incredible tangos with Europeans and N.
Americans, and incredibly bad tangos with Argentines."
What can you learn from this? What does this tell you?

This tells me that tango is not about where you were born or what is in your
genes or nationality. Great tango dancers are from every country, and all
walks of life.
