Hola Listeros
We're heading to BsAs next week! March 26 - April 5. Very exciting!

Are you going/ already there? I know a good number of you in the Northeast and some nationally, some of you I know from the list, and I figure this is the most effective way to find out who's going.

My partner and I thought it might be interesting if and we could connect and share a table at a milonga. It's great if you show up at a milonga and you already know some people there to get started. We can get some warmup dances with each other and ease into the local tango scene that way. I don't mean to go on a group trip, I'm just looking for a little crowd to meet up with some nights, like we do at the milongas up here. When I was in BsAs last I went everywhere by myself and I thought there was some room for improvement in that.

Also if there is some maestro/ -a you feel you absolutely should recommend for private classes, please do! (close embrace especially). Contact and rate info is appreciated.
We are thirty-something from the Northeast and Europe. We're nice and laidback world travellers with manners, not frantic tango snobs. We do pretty decent on the dance floor, we dance close with no inconsiderate tricks. We just want to have fun. I speak the language and I know the music (I'm a DJ).

I propose to exchange email addresses and later local phone numbers so we can communicate when we're there.

Best regards
Tine

Dear Tine:

I know that you want to have fun on your trip to
Buenos Aires, but please think about about what you
are doing. You want to fly 14 hours to a foreign
culture for a single week, to learn about a dance,
which you teach....and then you are asking a bunch of
Americans and Europeans on this list, to sit with you
at your table. Next you are all going to learn less
than "half" of the tango dance, "close embrace",
because none of you want to learn the entire dance.
This is probably the reason that you have to be in a
small group, and cannot dance with anybody, outside
the group.

If you are going to really do the above, why take the
trip to Buenos Aires at all? You might as well just
eat your meals at Mac Donald's, skip the wonderful
Argentine steaks, and stay in an American hotel, to be
sure that you are not exposed to outside influences.

I would recommend that you go down there alone, as you
did before, but this time make an effort to meet
Argentines and really experience the Argentine culture
first hand. Dance with everyone you can and have some
fun. Why not try to learn the entire dance, not just
a piece of it. Forget hanging out with the Americans
and the Europeans. You can do that in the US and in
Europe. Maybe if you do this, then you will become
more fluent in tango, and a better teacher. Forget
pre-packaged easy to consume hamburger. Go for a real
steak. It is much more interesting. My opinion.

Don't you dare accuse me of being culturally small-minded. I have travelled to and lived in more countries, I have interacted with more internationals, and I grew up speaking more languages than you could hope to equal in your lifetime.

Since you have never danced with me or seen me dance you have no legal standing to say anything about my technique open or close or who I can dance with. Certainly there have been no complaints from the accomplished leaders that I have the good fortune to dance with every week in communities around the Northeast.

Furthermore I think the good people on this list don't appreciate your insinuation that they are no more than a bunch of MacDonalds-chewing gringos that nobody would want to hang out with if they can avoid it. Get off this list then.

You are obviously a tango snob and I dont want you at my table at any milonga, ever. There was therefore no need to respond to my post. You have managed to sour a perfectly wonderful afternoon provoking me into a riposte.

Hi Tine,
I love to do the same thing, you will find several people from Portland in
BA, I too love to meet up with people I know, no matter where they are from.
Enjoy your trip and kudos to you for making as many friends as possible, and
enhance the tango family. I had planned to go, but personal matters got in
the way.

There are many good teachers in BA, some of fame that I am sure you know, I
recommend Muma, Tete and Ricardo Vidort, some of the greatest dancers in BA
(in my opinion).

You can contact Muma at 4772-8992
Ricardo at: ricardobaila@yahoo.com.ar

The rest you will find listed in El Tangauta or BA Tango magazines.

Have fun

Go Tine,

I wish I wasn't a beginner, wish I was going to BsAs, and wish I could have even one dance with you. I read all your comments on tango-l and everythi=
ng on your web site. I find your comments and suggestions are extremely well thought out, professional, and always offered in a spirit of sharing and=
helping. Although we have never met and probably never will, I think you are a super teacher. I have taken suggestions you have made on tango-l and =
tried them and they helped me. I hope you and the folks who join you have a wonderful time in BaAs. Don't let anyone darken your day.

hi tine-

andrea from nyc...i had a friend post this because my internet portal wont be accepted. my email
is ako31@nyc.rr.nyc.

i will be here in buenos aires until march 21st.

if u and anyone else would like to hang out at a milonga i will be going to the following:

tonight-thursday- IDEAl
friday- la viruta
sat-sunderland
sunday- porteno y bailarin
monday- la divina malonga

if u havent been to la catedral...go, its my favorite.

i recommend classes with frumboli, gavito (he will return from italy soon and i have been moved to
tears in his classes), capussi, balmacedo, and salas - they are all in town for that cita
festival. you can crash their classes which are all full by waiting at the door to the salon and
see if there are any spaces left.

speaking of space...this list serve is a pretty testy place to be lately. i went to la nacional
last nite and for the first time ever in buenos aires was not asked to dance. but i saw the most
amazing embelishment by an aisian woman in blue striped shoes.

and for all of u obssessed with the authenticity/exoticism thing- i am taking two people i do
business with here (i am now having manufacturing done here so that i can mix business and
adddiction)to ideal - a touristy milonga. they are native b.a.'s and have never been
to one!
