Is there a database manager (preferably relational) which one can use to
maintain and manipulate MP3 tracks on a laptop for use at milongas? The
categories I'd like to use would include: "Artist", "Title of Selection",
"Tango/Vals/Milonga/Cortina); "Year Recorded", "Kind of Instruments"
(e.g., orquesta tipica; 2 guitars + bandoneon);
"Instrumental/Estribillo/Cancion" (with name of singer); "Danceability"
(likely to be pretty subjective); maybe also "BPM". A relational DBM
would permit the addition of new categories.
I'd like to hear what people find useful.

The problem with database managers is that the db has to be updated
constantly (or your files left static) in order to be useful. And you'll
spend a lot of extra time categorizing, etc.
What I do on my network is use descriptive filenames like the following:
tracktitle (type) - artist - album - tracknum.mp3
type is either blank for tango, (m) for milonga or (v) for vals. Files are
put into directories by orchestra.
Then I use WWWinamp, a mini-server developed by Nullsoft and now updated
and maintained by Halo8
https://projects.halo8.net/?codeName=halo8wwwinamp
The server app will scan your specified directories and build a text
searchable index on the fly. You can then use the browser-based interface
to search for and queue your music into your winamp mp3 player. I use it a
lot for my home network (esp. to control music from another room) and for
simplifying searches while I DJ.

Hi Alan,
MP3 files use two kinds of tags ID3v1 and ID3v2. Both kinds of tags can be present in one file and basically ID3v2 is a much more flexible newer version with more fields and more options. As far as I understand a software can add ID3v2 tags, i.e. the MusicMatch software adds the tags Tempo, Mood, Situation, Preference and Bio. However I haven't seen any MP3 Tagger that allows you to define your own tags. If anybody knows of such a program, I'd be very interested.
I use MP3 Collector Pro ( https://www.collectorz.com/mp3 ) and I mainly use the following tags to classify my music:
- Track Artist: <Orchestra> or <Orchestra with Singer(s)>
- Orchestra: Just for the Orchestra
- Genre: Tango/Vals/Milonga etc.
- Situation: Dance / Listening ... etc.
- Preference: Good / Bad ... etc
- Year
There are additional tags, such as BPM, Lyricist, Encoded By, Copyright which are standard. MP3 Collector has its own database and allows you to "rename" a field in the database. I.e. you could you the field "Encoded by" to store the name of the singer or "Instrumental" and rename this field to "Soloist". In the database view it would show up as "Soloist", however it would still be stored in the "Encoded By" field in the mp3 file.
MP3 Collector is only a "tagging" and library software. It's not a player and it's not an MP3 encoder. There are all-in-one programs such as MusicMatch that do all of those.
If anyone has any other comments regarding suitable MP3 tagging software, please post them to the list.

With ID3-TagIT (https://www.id3-tagit.de) it's possible.
