Subject: goodbyte to tango -welcome teenagers
Dear friends from Tango list
I keep thinking about comments of Larry Carroll , specially about being
rejected by young women when asking them to dance.
Last friday we went with a friend (he is more or less the age of Larry ) to
a milonga here in Buenos Aires, a place specially known to be attended by
teenagers : La Viruta .
I have not been to this place for the last six months , so it was a surprise
to see the tango lesson ,when we arrived. There are three levels:basic
,intermediate and advanced. The milonga uses a facility from the Armenian
Cultural Centre , a café in an underground level.
The advanced pupils have been taken to ground floor ,they are around 30
persons.
The basic pupils were at the underground level, also around 30 persons ,
near the counter at the end of the floor (thye used to be at the entrance
underground, but it makes difficult to enter to the café for the people, so
they were moved). Basic , means the pupils that came for his first lesson
ever , so they are really basic . After some lessons (eight I think )they
are transferred to intermediate.
Intermediate pupils .... there were around 100 persons, mostly teenagers, at
the center of the floor .
Really, a flock of human sheeps , with all respect .
With one "shepherd" , shouting the basic directions , i.e. to keep the line
of dance , to feel the weight of the woman, etc...
The lesson lasted until 12 pm, and later it was needed anouther half an hour
to clear the floor, and to arrange the tables, since tables are not
completely arranged until the lesson es ended. This creates and atmosphere
of "friendly hurlyburly" that could be disappointing for milongueros and
milongueras " clasic style" , but .... It is also refreshing to see all
those teenagers having fun and enjoying his/her tango lesson.
Youth has something , a value of "just baked ", or the fragrance of yeast,
when you enter into a baker´s shop.
I think this a fair description of La Viruta , a baker´s shop, where you are
allowed to enter and see how the bread is made ,and get involved if you want
.
Later at the dancing, I was politely rejected by a young woman, take another
teenager to dance for her first time ever , take another woman ( a bit grown
up) to dance milonga , and finally found a woman on her 40´s to dance a
tanda of valsecitos , which we enjoy pleasantly one to each other .
I was talking later with my friend, which was not very convinced to assist
to La Viruta , since he prefers traditional milongas to dance . But he also
liked to see all that young people having fun , and we enjoy our night .
That ´s what friends are for , aren t they ??:):):)
Warm regards

Bravo! Well writen. You're right: Most pleasant are those "old timers" who
kept a young heart!

Incredible brilliant description! :-)))

There's an important detail in your words: "politely" rejected. But,
unfortunatly, not all women do it the polite way.

I once read that a good leader [more neutral: dancing partner] is someone
who can make a beginner feeling comfortable!!!
