Dear Tango-L readers,

I just read a few of the recent messages in the archives.

At least once before, I suggested that people indicate where they live and danc
when they start a new topic or reply to a current topic. This information is
helpful because it helps other readers decide if the opinions stated are useful

In her October 7 reply to Astrid (I could not find Astrid's original message so
I do not know where Astrid dances), I feel Norma makes some good points, but
also some bad points. For example, I agree with Norma when she said it is
useful to watch for a while after you arrive at a milonga. I should add that
this is good advice even if you frequently attend the milonga. People change
slightly from day to day or from week to week. Visitors to a milonga can chang
the dynamics of a milonga (such as the flow of the line of dance).

I disagree with Norma when she said: "the milongas are so cheap now that even i
you go in and stay an hour and leave, there is not much lost".

If Norma had stated where she lives, then this may not sound as critical as it
does to me. Perhaps she lives in a city where the milongas cost at most $5 and
if this is true then I agree that "there is not much lost"

Maybe Astrid is from a city where the milongas are really inexpensive and maybe
maybe she was describing visiting a city where the hotels and restaurants are
very expensive and where the milongas seem similarly expensive.

Simply saying "there is not much lost" does not show much sensitivity or
empathy for the different experiences of other people. I assume Astrid's
description of her feelings regarding the cost of some milongas is accurate.
In New York City there are some dancers who attend only the free milongas.

On my web site there is a version of my New York tango calendar which describes
only the milongas. I highlight the free events.

I make similar points on my web site. The direct file can be accessed via:

I hope you enjoy my site.
