I asked my brother in law if it was true that Argentina changed so much
since last March when we spent close to two months in Buenos Aires.
Our experience was that the people where very friendly, the milongas, the
teachers and the orchestras were fantastic. We plan to go back in a month
or two to celebrate our golden wedding anniversary.
Here is the answer to my E-Mail:
Hola Elemer, acabo de leer tu e-mail y apresuro su respuesta. El autor de
la nota es un chanta, que repite la vieja historia aprendida. Los
porteqos no son todos los argentinos. Apenas los que vivieron y viven "en
el puerto" y no son mas arrogantes que los newyorkinos, londinenses,
madrileqos, berlineses,etc. Es cierto que existis y existe un sentimiento
anti-gringos. Por algo sera. Y los gobiernos de mierda que supimos
conseguir (-votar-) para sobrevivir mantenman relaciones carnales con WAS
(les obsequiabamos el tujes. Durante los zltimos 10 aqos, con el
menemismo esta caractermstica llegs al cielo. El turco, con la ayuda del
gendarme del norte, y toda su banda, nos hizo creer en la vigencia para
siempre del 1 a 1. Los mas grandes y mejores negocios se hicieron en esos
10 aqos. El seqor que escribis esa nota, no aclara su nacionalidad. A
pesar de "asombrarse csmo trataban uds. a los extranjeros", con lo que
pareciera que il es marciano, me parece que es argentino, porque en cada
parrafo muestra la hilacha. Y la frasesita sobre que los que vienen, al
fin y al cabo es para dejarnos plata, para que el pais no se siga
hundiendo mas en la miseria, es "de cuarta". Este fulano es un patitico
"lumpen proletariatem" que reniega de todo, de su esencia, que quiere ser
otra cosa, y no lo logra porque "los otros" no lo aceptan. Es un
francotirador con la pslvora mojada. No le hagas caso, Elemer, de boludos
esta el mundo lleno, y como el tmtulo de aquella vista de J.Bond,: son
eternos. Que se queden bien lejos. La reina del Plata, no los ha de
extraqar. Como me lo preguntaste, todo esto es lo que me parece sobre el
e-mail que anda circulando por alla. Cosa de argentinos! Espero que tu
actividad de D.J. resulte placentera. Mira que nos das sorpresas vos. Me
parece barbaro que andes en cursos, talleres, y milongas poniendo vos el
gusto sobre la mzsica. Besos a la Pochi. Y el viaje proyectado??? Por

Apologies for mi malo espanol, but could you translate? I was in Bs As last
November and found the people and the milongas friendly and crowded as
always. But a slice in time doesn't give visibility to gradual and subtle
changes that occur over the span of months or years, and surely the economic
and political climate will be having an impact. I'd love to read the
anaylsis from your brother-in-law.

Mt. Dubrovay sent my critique of Argentines to one of his friends, who
spouthed che guevara style rhetoric of anti-americanism, of how gringos
ruined argentina, (even though it is entirely their fault for having a
penchant for buying foreign stuff which depleted their currency reserves
which led to trouble with the IMF-economics 101).
You see the hostility I am talking about? add to that the Argentine
arrogance and you have a nice mix of the prevailing attitude there.
