Hello "for the love of tango"
Yes, it sounds like you've had some bad experiences. Everything you've
mentioned has probably happened, I guess, somewhere, but I find it hard
to believe that anyone one person, or group of people, fell hook, line,
and sinker for all six items you mention. If you did, its your own
fault. And you could lend your story at least a little credibility by
telling us who you are, where you are from, and yes, even who committed
these atrocities against you. I have not much sympathy for you. It did
not take me long to recognize that I needed to use common sense in tango
as well as the real world. I didn't buy shoes without trying them on
(1), I didn't buy CD's without listening to them (2), I take the DJ's as
they come; I appreciate the good ones, and pity the poor ones, since
they know not what they do (3), Tango Houston dues are $12.00/year, and
I spend 5 times that myself contributing ink cartridges and
paper....CasaArgentina has never given a dime; all our proceeds are from
membership dues and donations for performances/demos (4), any student
that continues taking lessons from a teacher who doesn't teach
fundamentals deserves what they get (5), and to comment on number 6;
there are many people who spend a lot of money going to Buenos Aires to
take lessons from the masters, etc, etc. That's great, and I hope they
get their money's worth. I went with Robert Hauk and Alejandro Tosi last
January. We had a few good lessons, but the emphasis was on dancing at
the afternoon, evening, and nighttime milongas; lots and lots of
dancing!!!! It was a blast, and I spent 18 DAYS there for a grand (and I
mean GRAND) total of about $2200.00, including two pair of custom dance
shoes from Fattomano's, four pair of street shoes, clothing, t-shirts,
all the food, accomodations, lessons, airfare, milongas, cab fare,
trinkets....everything!!! So if you want to spend a lot of money go
ahead! If you don't, do a little bit of research (duh!!!!), and go for
next to nothing!!!
But...like I said; if you want to post on this list, why can't you tell
us who you are and where you live?
And to address another anonymous poster; La Morocha.......I'm very
grateful that my instructor "coralled" us in classes and taught me how
to dance milonguero so that I could survive in the crowded milongas in
Buenos Aires. Just talking about floorcraft, is not enough. It's a skill
that goes along with the dance, and must be learned and integrated into
your dance, and your muscle memory, should you want to dance at El Beso
on a Wednesday night! (Wednesday's the big night there, right?, I can't
remember...) AND, "sherpal1", I doubt seriously that any resident of
Buenos Aires has ever even thought about laughing at a gringo who
attempts to learn milonguero, in any manner necessary. I know that the
milongueras there certainly appreciated my corraling!
Number 2....trying to talk to me while I'm leading is about the biggest
turnoff I can imagine. I don't normally end a dance in the middle of a
tanda, but if you start chattering while we're dancing, you're probably
gonna be looking for your chair long before the cortina arrives. The
rest of your "objections" I'll agree with whole-heartedly, BUT (and
especially after your previous two "ways to kill"), I think that you're
probably rather paranoid. If anybody actually did what you talk about in
your last six or eight "ways to kill", they certainly wouldn't last long
as teachers.
And that's what it boils down to...if they're any good, they'll draw
students. If they're not, they won't.
And I'd like to say once again, who are you and from where do you
write??? It's pretty hard to take seriously someone who has not the guts
to post to the list in their own name, and I think that, and location
should be required.....(just my opinion)
Regards, and thanks,
Michael from Houston

the one writing?
Who named you the new police of the list!
Your dance socks, eventually you know that, that is why
you need to dissagre ,call cowars other members and
write bulshit (very long ones).
Respect the right of the others if they do not want to
post their names. It could be for many reason.
Get lost pitty "milonguero"

Plus, you do not know how some of these malformed leaders prowl this list to
determine who is saying what. They use this list, the postings and
information as ways of controlling or dare I say levelling reprisals against anyone who
speaks out.
I can tell you one thing about location, location, location, there are three
states who are battleground states in this upcoming election, and which are
contiguous, which have leaders of tango clubs who plot, scheme, compete and
create alliances and rivalries that make it seem like we are warring duchies in
the Middle Ages.
Sometimes I wonder if Tango attracts these personalities for it seems there
is an abundance of them in this dance form.
