There were times when any attempt to discuss the feminine and masculine role
in tango were met with stern criticism on the part of women's lib fanatics
that perceived such discussion as a veiled attack on their achievements.
Recently I was surprised to see references from Steve Brown to the 'Neuter
American Tango' or the 'Castrated Tango'...Tom Stermitz also referred to the
importance of masculine and feminine role in tango to be able to obtain
transcendental experiences...I believe this is extremely important as well
as the cultivation of musicality and feeling as essential aspects of
Argentine tango.

Anyone who is intrigued about the masculine and feminine principles at work
in the tango trance will benefit from perusing the work of David Deida
(www.deida.com) a modern-day tantra teacher. His writings illuminate the
everyday experiences of fully inhabiting our mascuine or feminine archetype
(or not) and what the consequences of these decisions are. Although his
language can become joyfully earthy, which some may find shocking, his
insight in these roles is profound. Anyone who has intense tango
experiences will find food for thought aplenty:
"On the dance floor, swooned in the arms of a powerful, loving, completely
present man who desires you, your body opens along with your heart. Sure,
you can resist. You can close down so that you are not swept away by his
magnetic presence. But if you re open enough to dance freely, then you re
probably also open enough to become more available to his masculine
presence than you would otherwise be However, whether you surrender to a man
s desire, to your own desire, or to divine desire is a matter of your
current level of love Devoting your heart to your own desire, to your
commitment in marriage, is certainly much deeper than devoting it to a great
dancer who happens to swoon you on the dance floor. But there is a devotion
that is even deeper It is a devotion to the force of love itself."
- David Deida, Finding God Through Sex
Not for everyone, but maybe you'll find it valuable...I have no financial
interest in David's work, although I've found his writing very useful in our
tango teaching and in my own spiritual work.
