Subject: Neo-Tango Music
I think a good case can be made that the Gotan Project and other groups
such as Bajofondo tango club have created a new genre of music by
integrating tango rhythms with those from other musical forms to create a
modern world tango music with a dance-club sound. Calling it neo-tango
music seems to be reasonable way to identify the genre.
In his review of the Gotan Project's CD, Richard Byrne of the Globalist
writes, "La revancha del tango" picks up where Piazzolla's "nuevo tango"
left off -- and pushes the music into new avenues opened up by the
collaboration of dance music and world music.

Whether one chooses to dance to neo-tango music is largely one of personal
choice. It is quite popular with tango dancers under 30 and DJs who play
music for dancers in this age group had better be up on their neo-tango
music. It is much less than popular among older dancers who typically
prefer a more traditional sound.
One element of confusion that can arise in discussing neo-tango music is
lumping it together with non-tango music that has the right tempo for
dancing tango steps.
