Hi list.
I ordered a bunch of the rca victor 100 anos cd's and they came in today.
Man, do they rock! All of the recording have been re-engineered where
there is almost no hiss or distortion, and the the track selection was
very thoughtful and retrospective. The series gives you a taste of the
wide range of styles and talents that the tango has hosted throughout
its lifetime.
The Di Sarli and D'Arienzo cds are absolutely phenominal. If you think
the recordings of the fm tangos were good, you're in for a surprise.

The D'Agostino De Caro cds blew me away, the fidelity they acheived with
tangos from the 20's is amazing. If you haven't connected with the older
tango, the D'Agostino cd is a good place to start.
The Gardel cd is a nice collection, mostly with orchestral accompaniment,
which beats the hell out of scratchy old recordings with sparse guitar
accompaniment.
Troilo con sus cantores is definitely a must have, it has a great selection
of his dance oriented music.
Two cd's you should be wary of are the instrumental troilo and sexteto
tango. They are not very dance oriented.
The Troilo is later stuff, arranged by piazzolla, and it almost seems
like it should say Piazzolla on the front rather than troilo.
There are some phenominal tracks on it, and it's probably my favorite
out of the collection, but it is more for late night, small crowd dancing
and private enjoyment.
The sexteto tango is absolutely twisted. Those guys are perhaps even
more progressive than piazzolla, in that under the insanity lie the tangos
of the golden age.
Anyway, the 100 anos series has my enthusiastic seal of approval!

I agree that this series of discs is really spectacular.

{"The Di Sarli and D'Arienzo cds are absolutely phenominal. If you think

The RCA Victor 100 Anos series D'Arienzo, to my knowledge, is a collection
of D'Arienzo's works from the 50's and perhaps a bit beyond the 50's. By
contrast, many (but not all) of the tracks on the D'Arienzo FM Tango (now
Solo Tango) insrumental are from the 40's, so they are different works.
Also, after listening very closely to the Di Sarli 100 Anos disc, I am quite
convinced that this disc has several different versions of the same songs
from the FM Tango disc by Di Sarli, all from the 50's. Not all of them are
the versions most suited for dancing, although most are. Perhaps Mark
Celaya or someone with more depth of knowledge on the recording dates of
these discs can comment more on this. For instance, Di Sarli recorded Bahia
Blanca both in 1957 and 1958, Cara Sucia in 1952 and 1957, etc., but there
is no indication on the discs which year the tracks were recorded in. My
ear tells me that some of the tracks found on both the FM Tango (now Solo
Tango) and 100 Anos discs were recorded on different dates.

{"The D'Agostino De Caro cds blew me away, the fidelity they acheived with

The De Caro tracks are indeed from the 20's, but the D'Agostino album is
entirely from the 40's, all with vocals by Angel Vargas.

{"The Troilo is later stuff, arranged by piazzolla, and it almost seems
like it should say Piazzolla on the front rather than troilo."}

The Troilo instrumental CD contains 3 tracks that were WRITTEN by Piazzolla,
but are played with a different interpretation and arrangement by Troilo.
The disc is all of Troilo's later works, which were more of a
concert/orchestral sound than his dance works from the 40's. To me, they do
not really resemble Piazzolla's music at all, although they are certainly
influenced by the movement that Piazzolla began. I don't believe any of
these pieces were arranged by Piazzolla, as Piazzolla left Troilo's
orchestra in the 40's. It is all classic Troilo, in his concert era, with
Troilo's unique arrangements and sound.

As Dan and Clayton note, the Troilo CD presents his concert era music, but
it is glorious concert-era music. For dancing most people will prefer the
earlier Troilo recordings, of which (ironically) Astor Piazzolla was one of
the arrangers. My favorite two CDs for Troilo in this era are Anibal
Troilo--Instrumental (Tango Argentino BMG-RCA) and Troilo/Fiorentino (Solo
Tango BMG-RCA--formerly FM Tango). The first captures with a pretty good
sound, the early classic instrumentals of the Troilo orchestra. The latter
has very good sound and captures many of the Troilo/Fiorentino classics,
including Malena. To my ears, the Solo Tango release has a higher quality
sound than the FM Tango incarnation of the same release, but does not quite
match the sound quality of the Troilo concert era recordings found on the
RCA Victor 100 Anos series.

For those who are interested in listening to tango, (or doing performances,
or dancing the liquid and nuevo styles of tango), the Astor Piazzolla disc
on the RCA Victor 100 Anos series is also quite remarkable....

Steve

Hi Bernhard:

Classic Tango <https://www.classictango.com/> imports the CDs from
Argentina. The title of every CD in the series is RCA Victor 100 Anos.
The website does not seem to really list the CDs. Call Mark Celaya (who
runs Classic Tango) in Los Angeles at (818) 763-1294.

With best regards,
Steve

So where can I get CDs from that series (and how do I identify them as
such)?

Bernhard

My apologies to the list (and its moderators). I intended my response to
Bernhard Kohlhaas' queries about the the RCA Victor 100 Anos series to be
private. I did not notice that he had set the reply to to Tango-L. I
hope the information was useful to others. I also apologize for including
some material that seems to have been previously distribute on the list.

The Tango Store (Zival's) in Buenos Aires lists 11 titles in the series RCA
Victor 100 Anos: 1) D'Agostino y Vargas, 2) Anibal Troilo, 3) Carlos Di
Sarli, 4) Carlos Gardel, 5) Juan D'Arienzo, 6) Julio De Caro, 7) Libertad
Lamarque, 8) Orquesta Tipica Victor, 9) Roberto Goyneche, 10) Sexteto
Tango, 11) Anibal Troilo/Sus Cantores. They do not list the Piazzolla CD.

Can anyone provide a complete listing of the titles in the series (perhaps
with comments about each)?

With best regards,
Steve

Another option to shop for tango music (and videos)
is: https://www.tangostore.com

This is the website of the Zivals music store in
Buenos Aires, which has by far the best selection of
tango CDs.
