This web site:

https://www.ananova.com/news/story/sm_800705.html

discusses a japanese Robot that can Follow the Waltz.

Tango might be just a couple of innovations away.

New arguement:

Should they become available, is it better to learn to lead using a robot
follower, that will always do what you tell it to, or a beginner human being
that will make mistakes.

The website mentioned in recent posting
https://www.ananova.com/news/story/sm_800705.html
includes a description of a robot that have been programmed to anticipate the movements of a dancer, by pressure sensors on shoulders and hands/arms.
It is a replicant , a machine that makes a countermove using as input the move that the human part produces. Huge quantities of programming time have been necessary to make a frame of action within whom this machine could work.

It does not look like a follower , there is not a presence , but a programmed reaction.

I believe you cannot tell a follower what to do, you can only ask.

Dancing with a 'beginner human being' does complicate the learning in some
ways, as there are mistakes being made by both partners. I think every
leader benefits by trying their dancing on excellent followers - then you
can be clearer about which problems are yours alone. But dancing with other
beginners also has major advantages - in particular, you get experience,
right from the start, in dancing _with_ your partner, whoever they may be,
and however they dance.

But a 'perfect follower' is not a blank slate - they are a strong,
passionate personality of their own, that form half the dance.

Dancing with a robot probably just makes you good at dancing with a robot...

It is unlikely either of you would end up dancing tango in anything but the
most banal sense.

Anyway, in most tango communities there seems to be no shortage of followers
- so much so that good followers will dance with complete beginners who
(inadvertently) treat them like, well, robots - just to be dancing at all.
(Thankyou all for your patience!).

Now, if we can develop the Tango Leaderbot, we might have a worthwhile
project. Perhaps it could have a Prime Directive to never tread on the
followers feet...
