Subject: Sorting through the North American Festivals

For me, the Stanford Tango Week helped define what is meant by a tango
festival. It lasted a week and had multiple teachers offering
simultaneous classes, milongas every night with live music, and drew
dancers from all over the country (and world). Because it was subsidized
by sponsors, Stanford Tango Week was also fairly inexpensive.

Of course, there are a number of shorter events who share a sufficient
number of characteristics with the Stanford Tango Week that they ought to
be considered short festivals rather than weekend workshops. The Austin,
Denver and Portland events are obviously festivals to anyone who attends.

With such geographically dispersed contributors, Tango-L is good resource
to put together information about the various tango festivals. So that
people can better sort through the various festivals, the following
information about each festival would be useful:

number of days,
number of milongas,
number of milongas with live music,
number of djs,
number of teachers,
number of class periods,
number of tracks (beginning, intermediate, advanced, etc.),
recent attendance,
housing arrangements,
prices.

Those organizers who are reluctant to submit their own information to
Tango-L for fear of running afoul of the no-commercial posting rule may
send their information to me and I will include it in a summary post with
information about all the North American festivals.

With best regards,
Steve
