Subject: Tango al Reves

Dear List,

I am very interested in a style of tango in which the woman faces the
same direction as the man. The leader has his right hand on the woman's
waist and he is holding her left arm with his left arm. I heard from one
teacher that this style is called "tango in reverse" or "tango al reves".
Does anyone here know anything about it? Can it be lead, or must it be
choreographed? Do you know of anyone who teaches it? Can one do it in the
milongas? Thank you for all your help.

I think this is not a style of tango, but a possibilty/ embelishment .It can
be lead,
it can be choreographed.

At the end of a molinete, or giro, the man release the hold of his left hand
, makes the
woman to do a half turn to his right , holds her from the waist and offers
gently his left
hand to her, so she places her left hand. They are both aligned .

To follow the line of dance, the simplest thing for the man is to do the
basic steps,
as the womand does , in this way, both dancers keep moving forwarding the
line
of dance. Other possibilities are forward eights . I am talking based in my
little
experience as student, I think skilled dancers can make a lot of movements.

I think I have seen Nito & Elba doing this steps at Club Gricel. But it
seems not
to be a a style , just an embellishment, any teacher can show how to do this
.

I returned yesterday from the New York City Tango Festival. It was great.
One of the instructors, Carlos de Chey, taught some figures based on what
is described below.

Couples began with the man leading back ochos. When the woman pivots, the
man turns 90 degrees in the direction of the woman's pivot so they are in
the position described below (facing and moving in the same direction.)
When they step backward, they cross in front. When they step forward,
they step behind the support leg. The couple can then move in the line of
dance (but not face the line of the dance) by moving sideways. Forward on
the left foot, slight pivot on the left foot to the left, and then back
on the right leg, slight pivot on the right to the left, and then forward
on the left. It's almost like the grapevine in swing.

If I haven't done justice to the figure, if Carlos is on the list, he
will correct me or explain it better.

P.S. You missed a great festival. Instructors included Diego and
Carolina, Guillermina Quiroga, Virginia Kelly, Carlos, Alicia Cruzado and
a whole list too long to mention. (The full list can be found at
www.nyctango.com.) We had a Black and White ball and a lesson and
milonga (though it was short) on the Staten Island Ferry. We would have
had one on the subway but the ride is too bumpy. In fact, going to
Brooklyn during rush hour, I bumped into a woman, who gave me a gancho!!
Lessons and practicas were at dance studios. An evening milonga was held
at Bethesda Fountain in Central Park.

I hope the organizers, Lucille Krasne, Trey Parker, and Gayatri Martin
put it on next year!! Then Carlos can explain it to you --IN PERSON.

So if you think you have to travel to Miami, Montreal or San Francisco to
have a great tango festival with great teachers, WRONG!! Come to New York
and experience the city's electricity in the classes, practicas, and
milongas
